Anime Summary: Vash the Stampede is a gunman on the run with a 60 billion double dollar bounty on his head which has made it difficult for him to go anywhere without being chased and shot at. Every town he ever visits ends up being destroyed because of his pursuers, but miraculously no one ever gets killed. Meryl and Milly are two insurance agents that have been sent to find Vash the Stampede and keep him under surveillance so no more damage is caused. Meryl, who leads the pair, refuses to believe that the man they have met can possibly be the legendary gunman. This spikey haired, gangly, young man is extremely friendly, a pacifist, hates blood and suicide, absolutely loves donuts, and is a dork and a crybaby (far from a notorious outlaw). But there is more to Vash and his past than meets the eye.

Manga Series:
  • Trigun
    • Summary: Trigun is a sci-fi manga series with a space western theme created by Yasuhiro Nightow in 1995, and adapted (awesomely) into a 26 episode anime series in 1998 by Madhouse. It is the story of Vash the Stampede, a.k.a. The Humanoid Typhoon, and the two Bernardelli Insurance Society employees, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, who were ordered to follow him and minimize the damage that seems to follow Vash everywhere he goes. Like Himura Kenshin from the manga/anime series Rurouni Kenshin, Vash flips personalities between harmless idiot and unstoppable warrior, but is always staunchly pacifist, believing that it is wrong to take the life of another, regardless of the circumstances.

  • Trigun Maximum
    • Summary: Our hero Vash the Stampede disappeared for two years after blasting a crater onto the moon above the desert planet he saved from annihilation. But with good people and bad alike trying to track him down, he won't stay lost for long! Count on crazier gunslinger action, new dastardly villains...and a new outfit, to boot!

  • Trigun: Rising
    • Summary: A one shot to celebrate the release of the Trigun movie. The story focuses on Rai The Blade, one of the Gung-Ho Guns, who is living in a small Plant town.

  • Trigun: The Lost Plant

  • Trigun Badlands Rumble
    • Summary: Vash is caught in a sticky situation with the evil Dodongo Bros. until Wolfwood saves him and they retreat. In the city, they meet with two men who want to hire Vash & Wolfwood to protect their city from those very same Dodongo Bros. A two-chapter story in preparation for the new Trigun movie!
Comment: Nightow changed publishers to Shonen Gahosha and the series continued to be serialized in Young King Ours magazine. Due to the original publisher retaining the name Trigun, Nightow had to change the title to Trigun Maximum, which isn’t a sequel; just a new name for the rest of the same series.

  • Trigun: Badlands Rumble
    • Summary: The story is set in Macca, a town surrounded by quicksand. With rumors spreading that the legendary robber Gasback has his sights set on the town, the mayor Kepler has brought together bounty hunters to protect the town. These bounty hunters have been following Gasback from town to town in hopes of bagging the prize. Meryl and Milly have come to town to assess the situation as insurance agents, but are shocked by this turn of events. Moreover, Vash the Stampede is also in town, along with the female bounty hunter Amelia and Nicholas D. Wolfwood.

Review: This is another series I randomly started watching because it happened to be showing on TV dubbed. Despite its telling age, the artwork is still very good. The anime was ok, but it didn’t inspire me to hunt down the manga series to read.

It’s basically about 2 genetically created children. Of course, one’s a bad seed and ends up being a psychotic killer of all humanity, while the other one is passive and peace loving. The war between the 2 brothers goes on over a century where the bad brother tries to wipe out humans and kill everyone that is close to Vash. Vash, on the other hand makes friends everywhere and tries to help people w/o ever taking a life.
Because Vash is always involved in large scale damages, he’s known as “Vash the Stampede” to the terror of everyone. As a result, 2 female insurance agents are always following him around trying to ensure he does less damage.

Unlike like the typical series, people do die and there are plenty of sad things that happened Vash. I liked the seriousness and action of the plot, but I actually didn’t care much for sometimes slapstick comedy or that Vash was too passive sometimes. He allowed his enemies to hurt him at times, and he kept mentally falling apart when people died in front of him.

It’s a series that doesn’t require too many brain cells to watch, and at the same time you can randomly miss shows w/o missing much. Now that I think about it, the plot reminds me a bit of “Trinity Blood”, except this is sci-fi placed in the western genre w/ cowboys whereas “Trinity Blood” was a mix of sci-fi & medieval times.
