Review: I was originally interested in this series because at one point in my life I was seriously thinking about becoming an erotica writer.
In this series, Shiina has been in love w/ Chihiro’s writing ever since her debut when he was in high school. The catch is that Chihiro writes S & M stories. Years later, supposedly after high school and college, his goal has been to become an editor at the place that the publishing company that Chihiro writes for. Through one event after another he, a newbie ends up as her editor. The problem is that she often tortures him w/ her props for ideas and etc for her stories.
There were a couple of things I didn't like about this story. This guy has been following the girl's writings since her debut and has probably read other S & M stories over the years, yet he always gets a nose bleed during every reading. That’s kind of ridiculous considering it's his job now. The second thing I didn't like was that an author forcing her editor to go to such extremes in the name of research was just too over the top. Third, as an editor, he often misspelled and etc. Not to mention, he devoted too much time towards catering to one author's whims as opposed to doing his real work at his company. Fourth, the mangaka tries to make the author shy, blushing, and etc when we know she's the top S & M writer and has been writing for an extremely long time. Fifth, I also got the feeling that maybe the mangaka is not as experienced in the topic of S & M; the author keeps going on about love in her stories. If the author feels like all men want are just sex and not the love, why in the world is she only writing S & M erotica? Why isn’t she writing so called smutty stories then?
Having read some real S & M works, the author's feelings and writings feel really amateurish. She's been writing for years but she's need to research for every story? And the props she's using are just the standard ones, and doesn't experiment w/ anything new. Not only that, but even though she's going through the motions as an "S" it doesn't feel like she's particularly passionate about any of the actual acts, she's just going through the typical motions. If you've ever read real S & M works, there's a lot about the psychological in it. It's all about tying pain, humiliation, desire, and fear into the act of love.
I finished reading all the releases, but I didn't particularly like it that much. However, the artwork was very good and the ecchi scenes bordered on hentai at times. It's too bad that shoujo/josei smut isn't drawn this well. Smut and ecchi are usually just showing women bits, and of course if you want male bits you have to go towards the yaoi dark side unless you're interested in slutty or subjugating women in hentai.
There’s not as much character development in the story. By chapter 34 you still don’t know why Chihiro is dedicated to only writing S & M stories, because it doesn’t appear that she enjoys it herself. As a writer, is it necessary to hire a model to cosplay her stories to help her write? It’s kind of ridiculous and a slap to the face to writers for not having enough imagination or experience to do it w/o having to visually see it in front of you. Besides, if she’s going to hire a female model, why not a male model as well rather than force her editors into it?
Shiina’s character is also strange. He plays the absurdly virginal, naïve and pure hearted guy. But give me a break, he’s been reading S & M stories, and is now an editor. To be honest, I thought his push over mentality wasn’t that funny and wasn’t particularly professional.
As for the romance angle, by chapter 34, both main characters are at the blushing stage and that’s about all. But it starting to look like the typical harem type of manga where all the girls are hot looking and starting to fall for the plain and naïve male lead.
Overall, if you like a lot of ecchi scenes, this series certainly has quite a bit of fan service. The plot itself is not really original other than the S & M angle. It’s not a series I’m that interested enough to stay updated on even though it’s close to being completed.
