I was sorely disappointed by The Expendables. It was a reunion of 80s action heroes (who is this Jason Statham dude anyway?) without any real point. Arnie and Willis were thoroughly wasted, and whatever humour was horribly awkward and badly written. The script tried to add depth to characters where there was none, and only succeeded in annoying me, looking really amateur, and detracting from the main draw. There were a handful of action sequences, cut to present eye-rollingly unconvincing feats of superhuman strength. The villains had the absolutely superfluous backstabbing and betrayal plotlines, and were no threat or challenge whatsoever.
I couldn't empathise with any of the characters, or care that they were supposed to be really awesome, or that they were going on a "tough" mission. (Note, it wasn't tough at all and was basically a montage of slapping explosives onto pillars.) There were no significant plot complications.
The presence of some over-the-top gore was good, but the strained in-jokes and character traits were flush-worthy.
Avoid disappointment and do not watch this movie.
