Our first 4th of July in Pittsburgh was fantastic. It was one of those days where everything just turned out well. The day didn't really start until about 4:00 when we got in the car with the idea that we'd drive to North Shore to where all the free carnival stuff was and then later look for a place to watch the fireworks. We decided fairly quickly, however, that we weren't really interested in the free carnival festivities. The parking would be aweful and it would be crowded and it didn't really seem worth it. So instead we shot across a birdge to Southside. There was a little spot down by the river that a model had shown me for a photoshoot a couple of months ago that I thought might be good for the watching of fireworks. It turns out other people had that idea too and it was a good thing we parked at 4:30 (for 9:30 fireworks). Realizing that we had nothing to do for 5 hours and we didn't want to move the car since our space would get stolen, we decided to go for a walk. And what a walk it was! We walked across bridges and after a long time showed up at the Southside Cheesecake Factory and had an amazing dinner where we both ate entirely too much. Then we walked allllll the way back to the car, arriving at 9:15. All in all the walk was 7.5 miles. And then we had wonderful reclining seats from which to watch the fireworks. I'm convinced that that place is the best viewpoint, except maybe for the boats out on the water. I have a really nice video of all 20 minutes of fireworks, but at the moment it's 200 MB, so I don't know how I would show it to all you people. For now you'll have to trust me that Pitt has a great show.
Saturday wasn't too shabby either. We somehow managed to have enough energy to go out to Ceremony. I'm still terribly shy there and haven't met anyone. The music is great though, so the dancing is good. And wonderful news, I've made an unexpected friend who's all about going with us next time. More about that in my next post.
