Oh god, one of you tech people please, please help me

I've seriously wasted my entire weekend on this.

Over here exists the most amazing online role-playing tool ever. I want to use it. I want to use it to make Mage-by-Skype combat viable and I want to use it to make a new D&D game possible at all. But whenever I try to start a server, it informs me that my computer can't be seen from the internet. So I learn Port Forwarding and open the required port in about 15 different ways. I try it with UPnP enabled and disabled. I make my IP address static. Still it doesn't work. Even the magical tool a Hamachi fails to let MapTool work. Scouring the internet reveals another possible problem.

Apparently my snazzy new WRT300N LinkSys Router doesn't get along with my comcast-provided Arris modem. I went on the comcast live-chat support thing and that, honestly, was the least helpful customer-service experience I can remember ever having had. So...what are my options? Can I go to Best Buy and get another router? It seems unlikely because this modem also controls my phone and cable tv. Does this mean I can't play D&D over the net with MapTool as long as I'm with Comcast? I don't know what other providers are in the area, but if that's the case then I'm going to find out.

Suggestions? Please? I don't want to waste another weekend on this.
