Jaye could have gone home for the weekend. She could have. She wouldn't have of her own free will. Instead she claimed that with classes having already started in what was looking to be her very last semester of college, she was too busy and needed to have her brain in place for the coming week. So Mahandra came to visit her for the night instead.
And the second Mahandra followed her inside the apartment, her first comment was, "Is the Soul Train pulling on into the station?"
"That's Nina," Jaye said, nodding towards the door where the loud music was coming from. "This is the only way you're meeting her, trust me."
"That's okay, music says a lot about a person, it's like we're besties." She took a long good look around the living room and said, "I'm sensing a decor theme. Call me crazy."
Interesting phrase, considering the decor made Jaye look crazy. There were animals all over. Knicknacks, stuffed animals, random odds and ends that she'd stolen from here and there, usually rearranged in some way. There were a couple legitimate purchases in there, which shamed Jaye a little; she felt weird buying anything that talked to her. Nothing matched. "Some people collect baseball cards," Jaye shrugged.
"If you're doing this to freak your parents out, I think you'll pull it off," Mahandra told her, picking up the lion from the coffee table.
"I think I do that by existing," Jaye pointed out.
"And speaking."
"I do that on purpose."
She was about to tell Mahandra that maybe she should put the lion down when its head turned toward her. "Stop her," it said, and Jaye sighed. Couldn't give her one free day, huh?
