There's no shows needing to be downloaded, the common rooms can be scary if you're not in the right mind for it, and it's Jaye's last day of freedom before classes start.
Hm. This calls for a phone conversation.
"Hey, you caught me," Mahandra says when she just picks up. "I just got home."
"Yeah, what's with you getting a life all of a sudden?" Jaye asks by way of greeting. "You're supposed to sit at home waiting for me to call."
"Like I do when you're here?" she says. "I went out with one of my fellow band geekers. We're kind of making it a thing."
Jaye kind of knows she shouldn't be upset that her best friend is going out and getting a life without her. After all, within a few weeks at Fandom Mahandra was complaining about that very thing with Jaye. It's about time she got out and did things on her own. Still, it's weird. "Having fun?"
"Eh," says Mahandra, and it's a verbal shrug. "It's something to do. I'm sure you're all busy and stuff."
"Not really," she says. "I got out
at New Year's and stuff at Caritas, but I've been pretty much
chilling and avoiding the newbie horde."
"Oh, god, again?"
"I know! They just keep coming!"
"Have you scarred any of them yet?"
"I told
one girl not to eat puppies and she looked at me weird, I think I've got
one girl thinking they're slipping LSD into the water supply, one of the
teachers is an older version of my ex-roommate, and
one guys's become my America's Next Top Model buddy, so yeah, I think so."
There's a long pause.
"What?"
'America's Next Top Model?"
"Shhhh. It's better than the bad movies on the science fiction channels."
"Or on AMC. If I told you what was on last night you'd go into hysterical giggles."
"Please don't."
"The band geeks didn't get why I thought it was funny, either."
That makes Jaye smile.
"Any cute guys in the godless newbie horde?" Mahandra asks.
"My Top Model buddy's cute, but I'm not really looking for cute boys right now."
"...Seriously?"
"Seriously. What, you thought I was going to just go glomping onto the next guy that came my way?" Jaye asks.
"No, it's just been a while. I'm counting the two dates with the guy where you didn't even do anything."
Jaye must pause a little bit too long, because suddenly Mahandra's asking, "What aren't you telling me?"
"Nothing!" she says. "There's nothing going on."
"Jaaaaaaaaaye. What's his name?"
"There's nothing going on."
"Which is not the same as 'there's no guy'. Spill, damn you."
Making a face like that will help, she says, "I might have the teensiest bit of a crush. Tiny. Like, miniscule."
"I knew that already. Name! I will come over there and shake you."
"You know
Jarod? The bartender I mentioned?" Jaye says in a weak little voice.
"...Of course you start crushing on a bartender."
"Shut up."
"Does he have a doppleganger?"
"No."
"You asked?"
"Uh huh."
"You're in the clear! Go for it!"
"I demanded that you shut up really nicely already."
"You know what? I'm going to hang up so you can call him."
"Mahandra, I'm not calling him."
"Chicken."
"Yep."
"I'm hanging up now."
"Mahandra, do- ...Mahandra? Dammit."
Jaye hangs up.
[Open, as is the door, though I might be a teensy bit slow.]
