Why is it that when someone in Dean's life is down and out and depressed about their life, he gives them support and love and an encouraging and uplifting speech, and when Dean is depressed and at the end of his rope, he gets physical abuse, derogatory comments, and yelling?
I just don't get it.
I mean, is Dean really that horrible and terrible that he DESERVES the abuse, simply because he's depressed, as some in fandom think? Is that what we have come to, that if someone is depressed and despondant about their life, they should be beaten and yelled at to "snap them out of it?"
Next time Bobby is going on about "poor him" being in a wheelchair, should Dean yell at him what a disappointment he is to him?
Next time Cass gets drunk and sits around moping about how daddy was mean to him, should Dean find a two by four and beat him around the head about it till he's bloody?
No, when those two are depressed, Dean encourages them, supports them, and shows them compassion.
When Dean is depressed, they return the favor by calling him names, yelling at him, and telling him what a disappointment he is to them while they beat the shit out of him (at least in Cass' case).
I'm sure this is going to be overlooked by Show, as the other abuses of Dean were. Sam never apologized for nearly killing his brother, or for all of the horrible things he said to him. Bobby never apologized for that ridiculous rant. I'm sure Cass won't apologize for beating Dean bloody. Meanwhile, Dean will apologize for breathing, and for being wrong/selfish/bad to do so.
It's the disparate reactions that Show has, that frustrates me. This idea that Dean deserves whatever he gets, because he's wrong in some way or another, so no one has to apologize to him for whatever they do.
And the even more frustrating thing is that it follows into fandom.
If Cass had beaten Sam bloody for being a dumbass and setting Lucifer free, there would have been calls for his head.
If Bobby had yelled at Sam when Sam was feeling depressed and hopeless, and told him what a disappointment he was, he would have been raked over the coals.
But when all of that is done to DEAN, he deserves it, and should apologize for being such a horrible person that Bobby/Sam/Cass were forced to abuse him in some way or another.
I just don't get it.
