Kripke Speaks Out...

Oct 24, 2008 23:39

I guess he decided to react to the fan reaction over what this week's ep "Yellow Fever" seemed to imply about one of his leads.

Click on the cut below for Kripke's message, and a rant from me.   LOL!

Message from Kripke

“So I’ve never before responded directly to the fandom’s comments about an episode, and I don’t plan to make a habit of it, but I couldn’t resist dropping in a thought about the episode “Yellow Fever.”

Which is this: Dean is not a dick.

None of the writers, or anyone on the creative team of SUPERNATURAL, think Dean’s ever been a dick, past, present, or future. He’s a hero. Dean did NOT contract the ghost sickness because he’s a dick. Victims contract the illness because they use “fear as a weapon.” Dean asks Lilith at the episode’s end, “why did I get infected?” And she cryptically responds, “you know why. Listen to your heart.” We, as the writers, probably should have emphasized this mystery more, I take responsibility for that omission. But the point is: the reason he was infected is because of a SECRET he’s keeping. A dark secret that will be revealed in Episode 10. And not at all because of any dickishness, implied or otherwise.

End Kripke Message, Beginning of My Rant!

I honestly didn't think this week's ep was well written. Aside from the implication that Dean was a dick and therefore deserved to be lumped in with men who thought dragging to death an innocent and harmless man was perfectly OK, it was very OOC for Sam and Bobby and riddled with shoddy writing.

There were so many better explanations that they could have come up with why Dean was infected and Sam was not. Because based on Sam's rationale for why Dean was infected (he's a dick, he's a bully, he uses fear as a weapon, neither brother is perfect), Sam should have been infected as well. And if it's based on secrets, then Sam DEFINITELY should have been infected.

So instead of saying it was because Dean held the heart, or it was just bad luck of the draw, they come up with, "you're a dick, Dean, and you also use fear as a weapon, while I am perfect."

Very poor writing.

Not to mention the fact that both Bobby and Sam seemed to share no sense of urgency over the fact that Dean was about to die. They just got him back from Hell, where he had been dead for 4 months, and neither of them showed the slightest sense of urgency. Bobby shows up, and both are calm as can be. Dean has 2 hours left? Not a problem. Let's just sit here on the car, and discuss it calmly.

No sense. Poor writing.

And it disappointed me because the revelations that Lilith had in her confrontation with Dean, I couldn't tell if were real or not, based on the shoddy writing of the earlier episode.

Granted, this episode didn't fill me with hatred afterwards like "Metamorphisis" did, but I surely didn't like it. :-/

And on the one hand, while I am glad that Kripke DID clear this up, it would have been nice to have seen it in the writing. And to continue seeing it in the writing, instead of having to have it explained to us later in a press release because it wasn't made clear due to shoddy writing.

Aside from all of that, now I wonder what horrible thing Kripke is gonna reveal that Dean did while he was being tortured in Hell, that was bad enough to warrent this.

So, either Dean is a dick or Dean has done something so evil, that it was comparable to men who dragged an innocent man to death just for being big and intimidating.

Oy.

I was really liking this season, but between this and the disconnect with Sam towards Dean and feeling like he could really give a crap that his brother is back from the dead and out of Hell, it's starting to be less enjoyable.

But at least Castiel is back! At least an Angel and God think Dean is worth something, even if those closest to him don't, LOL!

Ah well. Rant over.
