Joshua has some pretty bad memory issues - he can only remember bits and pieces of what happened prior to the last five years of his life. This... bothers him, so it might be something Van could make use of if he finds out about it. Aside from that, he tends to be suspicious of people at first, but as long as Van's careful not to slip up, it's not impossible to earn his trust.
