I was thinking it would be cool to build a little bot in my spare time out here. I used to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition when I was in high school ( I went to a technology magnet school). I was trying to think about the applications, and I thought it would be cool to build a small nanobot with embedded linux that could map out wifi ( Read more... )

Extremely Short Range RC Blimp

I like this idea. Not much to find around here in the way of hotspots. There are a couple downtown that you could use for testing. The CCD/telescope thing might be a little over the line as far as being LEGAL.

I was thinking you could actually use the blimp (above) to do exactly like you were talking about, but just not as long range. The only thing about that is it probably wouldn't hold the added weight of your equipment.

And maybe instead of email, use SMS. I have backend access to Nextel's SiHLR which handles all their packet data services (i.e. Some GPS functionality, Direct Connect, SMS, MMS, Wireless Web, etc...)

If we throw ethics out the window, then I might be able to help you out a bit. Since you're planning on running Linux, I might be able to throw together a little shell script that would exploit a bug I found in the SiHLR software. As long as I could telnet out from the blimp I should be able to do it. I'd have to clone a nextel phone which shouldn't be too difficult seeing as though I have access to the Ki algorithm keys used in initial registration for iDEN.

Not to mention, with the help of a Nextel phone, we'd have GPS capability.
