HOW THE FRICK DOES THIS REINCARNATION THING WORK

Where are the gods coming from?

For the purposes of this RP, all the dead Gods and heroes existed in the same heaven, Elysium. After the heroes had lived out their mortal lives, or after people stopped believing in the gods, they 'retired' to Elysium, heaven of the elite. They hung out there and had cake for eons, and if they wanted, they could apply to be reincarnated as a mortal soul.

Apply to be reincarnated? What, like it's a Travel Agency?

Yes. More or less. The reincarnation process was a very carefully thought-out, organized thing: only a few gods at a time would be sent down to earth, and never in the same place. It was also entirely optional, as some of the residents of Elysium had no urge to ever go back down to earth. The goal was to avoid the mess we currently have now, since the "Travel Agency" has pretty much been demolished.

Tell me more about this mess?

As you've probably read from the Plot Post by now, Mordred came in and fucked some shit up, as that is what Mordreds do. Somehow he managed to sneak one past the omnipotent Fates, and opened up a vortex in the middle of Elysium. Gods and Heroes of all kinds fell in during that upheaval, unknowingly falling to earth and being reincarnated as newborn mortals over a period of about 50 years. The Fates are trying to fix this mess by guiding everyone towards LA, hoping to restore the balance by aiding the side of good (which at the moment is pretty severely outmaneuvered).

What about the reincarnated Gods themselves? How do they deal with their mortal selves?

They aren't split personalities. Even if your character has lived their whole life unaware of who he or she is, they are still essentially the same person. Their mortal lives are not separate people, but rather the same people being reborn into new situations. There will be differences, sure, due to circumstances of life and different experiences, but the soul of the person remains the same-- so that even when they become 'aware', there should not be much of a mental split between the "god persona" and the "mortal persona." In the words of an apathetic god: "As Gods, we cannot change who we are, but these people are who we might be if the elements and conditions of life were allowed to affect us."

Why can't we use any modern religion folklore?

Well, for one, it's disrespectful to the masses of people that still believe in those things today. Your amazing mods are pretty open-minded, but in effort to avoid at least some drama, we're focusing on religions that are no longer widely practiced in the modern day. Also, the plot emphasizes ancient religions for a reason-- there are things going on that require the player characters to be from antiquity. For example, the modern religion gods are still being worshipped, so there's no reason for them to be retired in Elysium waiting to be reincarnated.

HOW ARE THE GODS OF THE DEAD DIFFERENT?

Pretty much every religion had a different idea of the afterlife. How does the RP reconcile them all?

Short answer? WE COMBINE THEM ALL AND DON'T ASK QUESTIONS. Longer answer: most of the ancient religions had some idea of an "underworld," or of the existence of a gray afterlife that human souls would go to after they died. We've split these afterlife ideas into three different realms, following a mix of Egyptian and Greek influence. There is the Tartarus realm, or Hell, where the bad souls and dark monsters would be trapped forever; the Asphodel Fields realm, where the majority of souls got to spend the eternity of their afterlife (and where the underworld gods dwelled); and Elysium, the ultimate heaven, and resting place of gods and mortal heroes.

So what makes the Underworld Gods particularly special?

They're special snowflakes. They hung out in the Asphodel Fields, a place that is similar to purgatory. Gods like Hades, Osiris, or Mictlantecuhtli-- they all were worshiped as gods who had dominion over the dead. They didn't go up to earth much (if at all) and had a tendency to be hermits, busy with their jobs in the underworld. If you're apping a God of the Dead, it's likely that they never went to Elysium, even after their legend faded into obscurity.

If the Underworld Gods never went to Elysium like everyone else, what does that mean?

Pretty much nothing new. They're in the same boat as everyone else, just sitting on a different bench. They are still technically residing in the afterlife like the other forgotten gods-- they're just hanging out in a different place. It's okay though, since usually they never got along well with other gods anyway.

But what about all the differences in beliefs about what the Underworld was?

Rather than having 398230 different underworlds, there is only one, and all the different underworld gods from different religions reside there. Now, they may have their own separate sections, but it's all interconnected and all the same place.

So what, they all have to share?

Basically, yes. Each religion tended to view their "Lord of the Dead" in different terms -- Hades was seen as a jailkeeper, making sure no souls escaped from his realm; Osiris was believed to be a judge of souls, deciding where you would end up. For the RP canon, we use these different concepts to form a place in the underworld for each God. Every god has their own "job" to do regarding the world of the dead, and they all work together to keep things moving peacefully.

HOW DOES THE IN-GAME TIMELINE WORK?

How does the real time vs. game time ratio work?

Two weeks of real-life time is equivilant to one week of in-game time. Every two weeks, the mods will post a week-change announcement, with future weather forecasts and any important worldly details. Seasons and holiday times will roughly coincide with Los Angeles' actual real-world time.

What if we can't finish our threads/logs within two weeks?

We would like to keep the game moving, and not get caught up in past threads that might be dragging along for one reason or another. Every week change new threads and new logs should be getting posted. If you haven't finished a log, it's perfectly acceptable to talk with the other log participants over aim or e-mail and OOCly discuss what would have happened. However, if it's a really important log for your characters, then by all means, backlog if you wish! Just specify in your post what week you're placing the log in and who's involved.

How often do Events happen in-game?

Events will happen roughly every two-weeks in-game time, or once a month in real-life time. Sometimes, all of the reincarnated characters will experience a ~*~Dream~*~ the night beforehand-- this is the equivalent of the Fates reaching out to effect events directly. There will be a big giant mod post describing what is going on, and any and all questions can be posed to that post.

WHAT IS UP WITH THIS JOURNAL COMMUNITY THING?

What is the function of the online journals in the game?

There is an online journal community that everyone's characters have joined. It's an Los-Angeles-based online journal community, where residents of LA are welcome to join and find out about what's happening in their local neighborhood and connect with other people in the city. It consists of public entries that are readable by anyone who is a part of the community, although your character can also post private or filtered entries if they wish. However, ALL PERSONAL JOURNAL POSTS SHOULD BE MADE TO THE COMMUNITY, AND NOT POSTED IN THE CHARACTER'S PERSONAL JOURNALS.

Why are they a part of the community?

Because the Fates drew them to it. As reincarnated characters, they are compelled to join it. Resistance is futile.

Are there normal people from LA in this community, or is it just the Reincarnated?

There are normal people in the comm too-- but since we only play the gods and heroes here, you'll never see them. Anyway, it's canonly not a GIANT community, but there are probably plenty of normal people who have found it and joined it. However, for certain, every reincarnated character that makes it to LA is fated to find and join this online community. And that's all we're really concerned about.

What about the reincarnated characters outside of LA?

If you're playing in this game, your character needs to be either in LA or on their way to the city. All reincarnated characters are being drawn to LA by the Fates, and since that's where the RP takes place, your character needs to be there. Therefore any reincarnated characters outside LA don't matter just yet.

When did my character join this community?

Up to you- it mostly depends on when they came to LA. The online community has been around for a few years, ever since blogging became popular. If your character has been in LA for awhile, they've probably been a member for awhile as well. If they've just come to LA, they're probably posting in the community for the first time.
