Benny stood to the side watching Dean and Castiel. He didn't trust the angel, if for no other reason than he was a hindrance to what slim chance they had of getting out of purgatory. Travelling with the human was risky enough, but a human and an angel was just asking for trouble. Everything in this place seemed to want a piece of those two.

Dean was honing his blade while Castiel watched. They finally had a moment's peace and were taking advantage of it to get some rest. Not that there was ever really anything restful about this place, but at least nothing was trying to kill them at the moment.

His companions were a strange pair. Benny only had bits and pieces of their story, neither Dean nor Castiel were exactly talkative, especially when it came to whatever it was that had forged the friendship, or whatever this thing was, between them. He was sure it was a hell of a tale, but one he was unlikely to ever know.

Even without the details, it was plainly obvious that there a bond between them. They fought side by side like they had been doing it for years. Spoke in few words, but seemed to innately understand each other. Though there was tension there as well, some unresolved issues causing strain, yet they both seemed on their way past whatever it was.

Studying them had proved a distraction from the oppressive danger that was always waiting. They had a way of holding themselves apart, while somehow still managing to gravitate to each other. They rarely touched, but when they did, it lingered in a subtle way that should mean absolutely nothing, yet seemed so much more. Not to mention the freakish way their eyes always seemed to find the other.

Benny was sure there were dead poets somewhere who had written about those kinds of looks.

The way they would look at each other in quiet moments like just now, as if checking the other was still there. Or in the midst of a fight, with danger all around, they always found time to share a glance, putting themselves at risk to protect the other.

Those glances were more intimate than a tender touch, a passionate embrace. Not that they seemed to care, but Benny had found himself turning away in those moments when they would stare at each other like everything else ceased to exist, their eyes sweeping over each other like a caress, soaking the other in. It was impossibly personal.

That an angel and a human could share something like this seemed ludicrous, yet there it was.

Dean was currently staring up at Castiel, eyebrow raised in exasperation as the angel had started pacing, or more accurately fidgeting on the spot, looking like he was uncomfortable with the idea of standing still. Castiel complied with whatever unspoken request had been made, settling on his haunches close to Dean, but not quite touching. Dean held his hand out to the angel, indicating the blade Castiel was clutching until he handed it over for Dean to sharpen, their fingers brushing together, lingering more than necessary.

Benny resisted the urge to roll his eyes as Dean seemed to realise they were more or less holding hands, and pulled away. How each of the pair was so oblivious to the feelings of the other was beyond him. He supposed they would continue to stare at each other in lieu of actual touch, or any other form of expression.

Benny cleared his throat and turned away to keep watch on their surrounds, leaving them to whatever form of surrogate intimacy they wanted. Not that he cared one way or the other, he convinced himself.
