i_rise_inside journal got my thoughts going about the end of season 5 and the inability of the writers to do the Dean Cas bond justice so I thought I would share my ranting….
I Love Dean and Sam and I'm sure I will probably watch next season, but it just won't be the same, it will sort of just be another TV show to me.
The writers stumbled upon something truly amazing with the Dean/Cas dynamic, I hate that in the end they didn't know what to do with it and just let it go by the wayside. It was the most intriguing friendship I have ever watched. The chemistry between Jensen and Misha juts made it that much more amazing.
It was an emotional and complex connection that TV and movies rarely get, I've seen it in books before but not really on TV. In the end it just seemed as though the whole apocalypse and angel human dynamic was too much for them to handle. Which is so heart breaking. We got a glimpse of what it should have been but they couldn't keep it going. And I'm not talking shippy here just about the bond between them. I choose to see them as shippy in fic but in the show I loved them for their friendship and camaraderie.
I'm beginning to think that the writers really did just stumble upon the brilliance of Dean/Cas that it was just a mistake and it was the brilliant acting of Jensen and Misha that really made it work, not their writing. The way it all fell apart in the last few episodes was horrible, lazy writing.
They even fucked up with human!Cas. This was such a big deal but it was completely ignored, only to have him be all angelised again. This should have been an intriguing and emotional story but it was so rushed it was hardly mentioned. All the places this story could have gone, it was such a waste to just throw it all away.
The emotional journey Cas could have gone on will never been seen now and I for one am very disappointed with that. While it would probably have been heartbreaking, seeing Cas deal with his emotion over the last two seasons has made me empathise so much. I don’t recall too many characters being able to reach into my chest and so effectively pluck my heart strings. Dean is perhaps the only other that has come close, which just added to the dynamic of these two interacting.
While it was wonderful that Cas has his faith back, it was just all done too easily, too simply. Cas is such a complex character that this should’ve been handled next season when they could have had time to do it right. This wouldn’t have detracted from the brothers, it could easily have been done as a side plot, as pretty much all of Cas’s story has been done.
I get that people see the brothers as the shows OTP, but I don't get why this doesn't mean either brother can't have friendships outside of that. It only adds to the characters it doesn't detract. I mean does having Bobby detract from the Dean/Sam relationship, in my view it adds to it. I felt Cas did as well. It gave another point of view of the brother’s relationship, we could see through Cas's eyes how much Sam and Dean mean to each other.
The dynamic that slowly built between Cas and Sam was also interesting. In the last couple of eps Cas showed faith in Sam, which I thought in some ways, helped Dean to see his brother differently. Having an outsider, who was a little more impartial, brought something more to the brothers relationship. Cas’s view of Sam may have been affected by the way Dean saw Sam, as Cas and Dean shared such a close bond, but over time Cas was able to view Sam separately.
I love more complex stories, that’s why I read so many books where they have the time to do in depth story and character development. This show with the apocalypse arc started to show some of that. I loved it so much I don't understand how other fans prefer the monster of the week stories?
I mean I loved the first three seasons, but even they were slowly developing the story arc leading up to the apocalypse. Shows that have no overall story arc tend to get old really quick and just wander aimlessly and don't suck you in. There was a reason the ratings were getting higher over the last two seasons. With the apocalypse over if the writers don’t come up with a compelling story to go through season six and just do one off monster stories the show will have lost so much of its appeal.
I guess I’m just ranting as the Dean and Castiel relationship had so much depth I really wanted to see it continue. While Supernatural may be all about the brothers, Dean and Cas were a sideline story that was so intriguing, it deserved more focus. They introduced an epic story arc that in the end unfortunately fell short of its potential. They made me want more and then took it all away…
ok rant over....for now....
