I walked down the sidewalk in the city today,
Gray cement and a strong odor of gasoline.
The tree branches were dead and bare,
No soft blanket of snow to hide the sharp edges.
I walked down the sidewalk in the city today,
And the people were slouched down into their clothes,
Bundles of designer rags and despair,
Masks hiding their jagged eyes.
I walked down the sidewalk in the city today,
And as I realized there was no place for anyone to hide,
I heard birds singing in the empty sky.
