I am so, so happy to hear that Prince William's engagement to Kate Middleton has been confirmed today. They've always been such a sweet couple, and I'm so excited that she's finally going to be our Princess!
There were rumours for ages that he'd finally proposed, but Prince William has always guarded his personal decisions quite fiercely, so to hear it confirmed is great. It's so nice to hear positive news for a change. She's going to be Princess Catherine soon- and I for one cannot wait to watch the ceremony on TV.
Oooh, I wonder if they'll put it on the big screen in the city centre? That seems logical... so much better on a big screen... or I could drag my lazy self to London, and see the parade. Actually, I may do that, if I can bribe Ma with the prospect a gallery or two, and to finally see Les Mis at the West End. Ha, off on a tangent there.
Back to the wedding. It's going to be amazing. I bet she has a enormous dress! And it's about time we had another descent female Royal to look up to (along with The Queen). Kate Middleton has been a modest, private woman, steadfastly at Prince William's side, and pretty much the picture perfect Princess, although not in that wooden, closed off way that poor Princess Diana was- you can tell the affection between Kate and Prince William is actually genuine, from the way they interact, and the stories people tell about their time together in Uni.
How cute are they?!
By contrast, Prince Charles and Princess Diana's 'romance', if you can call it such, was much more contrived and frankly rather sickening. I feel sorry for them both, and I'm glad the Queen has learnt her lesson and let the future, future King pick his own bride, and follow his heart. How can we ever be expected to admire our Royals if they continue to engage in outdated, gruesome practices that make any civilised person queasy? I'm only sorry I probably won't get to see King William on the throne until I'm an old lady. I'll still get to see the coronation of King Charles though, that will be super exciting (already told Mum there's no way in hell I'd miss being at the parade for that, not for all the tea in China), but Prince Charles kind of makes my skin crawl...
Leaving this on a happy note- I love the fact that Kate has middle and working class origins. She's not aristocracy, she's not related to Royalty. She might be upper middle class in her immediate family, but she's still a pretty normal person, about to become our Princess, our future Queen. That's pretty mind blowing. Mostly, it's a triumph for real love over tradition and convention. Edward VIII would have been tremendously proud, and, though it counts for a lot less, so am I.
EDIT: HOLY GOD, HE GAVE HER PRINCESS DIANA'S ENGAGEMENT RING!! THAT IS SO, SO SWEET! It's a bloody gorgeous ring too.
