Does it cover the intertestamental period at all? In a lot of literature about that time period it's almost like the world didn't exist east of the Aegean Sea, except for a minute there when Herodotus' Persians rolled through the Balkans only to have their asses handed to them at Thermopylae by 300 pederasts wearing skirts.
Not in great detail, but it does discuss it to some degree. It focuses on the rise of Hellenism and how this influenced the Jewish believers. It also mentions the Maccabees and the brief Jewish kingdom before Rome took over.
I actually do want to pick up a copy of this book. I'm also pretty ignorant of Jewish culture too and it's great that it's a quick read (too much school work @_@).
