Discussion Question: Book as Gifts

Dec 28, 2013 12:35

Did you receive any books for over the holidays this year?

This year, I specifically requested "no books" on my Christmas list this year.  Am I crazy?  Possibly.  I certainly have many, many books that I would not have minded discovering under the tree.  But I feel so sorry for my husband, who occasionally walk past my pile of "to be read" books and sigh, knowing that I won't get to some of them for years.  All in all, he's quite patient about the fact that he live surrounded by shelves filled with my books, and it seemed a kindness to at least try to reduce the number of volumes coming into the house.

But what about you?  Anything good?

Did you give any books as gifts to others this year?

My husband and I gave a huge pile of picture books to my (nearly) three year old nephews for Christmas.  Since their mother doesn't mind if the books are new or used, we were able to get a lot of titles, including both old classics and some (hopefully!) new favorites.  We picked out some books that were featured on Reading Rainbow, some Golden Book classics, and tried to have a variety of subjects - although I'm sure my nephews would have been perfectly happy if everything was about trucks!

My soon-to-be sister-in-law requested not a book, but a bookish board game: It Was a Dark & Stormy Night - A Game of First Lines for People Who Love to Read.  I've never seen it before, but it looks like a lot of fun.

One of my husband's brothers got a book from us.  He's a pilot, and he expressed an interest in From a Bush Wing: Notes of an Alaska Wildlife Trooper.  We made sure to pick it  up for him, because Alaskan pilots always seem to have the craziest, zaniest, best stories about their times flying over the wild country to tiny, isolated hamlets.
