They may have survived the fatal bus crash that killed their classmates, but death has finally caught up with the six survivors. When the body of one of them is found stabbed in the back, Morishige is instantly the main suspect, for she was found holding a sharp blade and her dress is covered in blood. But as the five students verbally attack and counterattack each other, it becomes clear that no one has a solid alibi. A second student loses herself to fear, and in her panic falls off the side of a cliff. Reduced to only four people in only a few hours, the students are desperate for rescue before they, too, die in the woods at the hands of a murderer.
On the one hand, the death of any high school student is tragic. On the other, these kids have already seen most of their classmates as corpses after the accident - I'd half-expected them to be hardened against further deaths. I'm glad that they are not immune to death, though. In fact, the intense reaction to the first death, where the characters discover their murdered friend in the woods, makes all the more sense because they'd thought that since she'd survived the initial wreck, she'd surely survive 'til rescue came. With her gone, it's clear that none of them is safe. Throw in the fact that she was murdered, and it's chilling for the remaining kids.
I have my suspicions about who the murderer is, but Suenobu tosses in enough clues that almost any person could be implicated. Konno, the main character, begins to wonder if she somehow murdered the girl and blacked out the memories, even though we have been with her since page one and know she didn't do it. Her self-doubt is frightening, but it also makes her the most compassionate. I was really surprised by the second death, but ultimately it keeps the momentum of the story going and seems to promise that no one is safe.
