When I posted this review to Amazon, I amended that sentence to say Even now, it’s pretty rare to see a black man and a white woman together in fiction, right? since that's what I meant to say. Off the top of my head, I couldn't think of any other black man/white woman couples besides Othello and Desdemona. But as you say, it probably does depend on where you live/what you read.
Mixed race couples are pretty common around here, but it is pretty rare to see that particular combination - most likely only because we don't have a large African-American population here in San Jose. They only make up about 3% of the population.
When I was tutoring middle schoolers, the girls were reading this book. I think the author actually stopped by the school for something - they were all pretty stoked about it. 11-13 seems young for this kind of racy material, right? Or am I just old and out of touch?
