Hungry!Summary:
It was summer. Rain brought fateful encounter and farewell between OC and a chef of French Restaurant.
Chapter 1 | Rain
It was five in the evening. The sky was dark, hanging silver and gray colored mass of liquid droplets of frozen water. It was clouds, wandering aimlessly in the sky, waiting themselves to be heavy enough against gravity. Soon drops of water started to be poured down on the fortunate place of the earth. The howling sound was heard when water started attacking soil grounds.
Having no umbrella on her hands, a slightly tall female figure covered his head from soaking rain. She was Kanako. She found herself tiptoed into nearest shelter which she thought an apparent run-down building. She peeked over the sky, waiting the rain to stop. Another couple of minutes left, she tried to be patient but failed. Tired of waiting, she looked around to find a place to sit. She studied all over the place and came to a conclusion that the run-down building is actually a restaurant. A French restaurant to be exact. She wanted to enter but it's currently closed.
Another male figure with a taller height came towards her direction. It was Yamada Ryosuke, the owner and the chef of the restaurant. Kanako thought it was another pedestrian who wanted to sheltered himself because he was also umbrellaless. Kanako was not paying attention when Yamada wiped drops of water remains in his body and greeted her,
"Hi Miss." He smiled with a quick nod.
Kanako just nodded and inferred a smile.
"Welcome to my restaurant. Would you like to pay a visit?" Ryosuke said while looking at the rain and put an OPEN sign.
"You just opened it though." Kanako rolled her eyes and chuckled.
The man sheepishly smiled and opened the door of the restaurant, "Come in."
The moment they entered into the restaurant, Kanako fell into her deep own thoughts about the restaurant. The restaurant was not really big, but it was not really small. There are some two-seated tables, four-seated tables and eight-seated tables. There are also some individual seats with one long table near the kitchen. Few paintings decorated on the wall making the restaurant a bit artistic. A classical music from a music player added into the restaurant's antics.
"It's you, Ryosuke." A young woman dressed in waitress costume realized that the chef have came.
"We have a customer, sis." The waitress was actually Ryosuke's older sister, Chihiro.
Kanako had woken up from her own thoughts when Chihiro greeted her, "Irrasahaimase" and proceeded her to the seat near the kitchen.
Kanako sat in silence as the waitress walked away to take the menu. Chihiro took the menu and wanted to hand it to Kanako but Ryosuke snatched the menu away. "Sis, will you please fetch a towel for the customer? She looked really soaked from the rain." Giving her OK sign, Ryosuke nodded and walked to Kanako.
"Hello Miss, nice to meet you. My name is Yamada Ryosuke. I'm the chef of this restaurant. Here is the menu. Would you like to start off with fresh beverage?" said Yamada. He tried as polite as he could.
Kanako thought as she supported her chin by her left palm, "I'm not really familiar with French drinks. I don't drink alcohol either. Recommend me something?"
"Then, would you like a glass of citron pressé?"
"C-Citron pré?" Kanako tried to pronounce as perfect as Ryosuke's but failed and continued, "What is it?"
"It's sweet and freshly-squeezed lemon juice with cold water." explained Ryosuke.
"Ok, I would like to try that lemon juice." Kanako chose without second thought.
"Very well, miss. Do you need anything else?"
"Yes, I'm quite hungry so I would like to try today's three course menu."
"Very well, miss." Ryosuke took the orders and excused himself.
Kanako couldn't help but stare at Ryosuke's back as he entered the kitchen. Too formal for a run-down restaurant, Kanako thought about the chef and smiled to herself.
"Miss, do you need a towel?" Chihiro offered as she inadvertently interrupt Kanako's daydream.
Kanako jolted a bit, "A~ Thanks. You're so thoughtful."
Finished wiping her body, her citron pressé came. Her lemon juice was served with a tall-glass. She smelled a unique combination of bitter and sweet taste from her drink. She took a sip and let the fresh and cold liquid pass her throat.
"Wow, it's good!" Kanako exclaimed. It was the most delightful drinks she ever had.
"Glad you like it." Ryosuke said without thinking and taking his eyes from the appetizer he prepared.
In no matter of seconds, he realized that he shouldn't be familiar with the new guest. Because he thought it would be impolite. Ryosuke hurriedly glanced at Kanako. To much to his surprise, Kanako also accidentally glanced at him. Their bodies were paralyzed as their eyes met. The world were likely stopped for seconds.
Back to their consciousness, Ryosuke apologized, "Pardon my rudeness. I should not my mouth slipped like that."
"Don't sweat it. It's okay. You're just too formal." Kanako tried to hide blush forming on her cheeks.
"Very well, miss. May I continue cooking?"
"Didn't I just say you're too formal?" Kanako rolled her eyes.
Upon hearing her rhetorical question, Ryosuke chuckled. "Haha, okay. Miss..?"
"Kanako."
"Kanako-san." Ryosuke tried to pronounce Kanako's name with a formal honorific.
"Kana-chan is okay, Yamada-san."
"Then, you can call me Ryosuke as well"
"Okay, Ryosuke-kun."
They chatted awhile until the Ryosuke was done with the appetizers. Ryosuke put a bowl of soup and a plate of prawns in Kanako's table.
"Looks really delicious. What are these?"
"This bowl is traditional onion soup, it's called soupe à l'oignon." explained Ryosuke. Kanako nodded in understanding. "And this one is crevettes à l'ail" pointed Ryosuke at the plate of prawns.
"Itadakimasu!" Kanako said and started digging her soup. "Umm.. Yummy!" Kanako enjoyed it.
Ryosuke smiled knowing her customer liked his cooking. He knew Kanako did not lie. He knew it from her eyes. Her sparkling eyes. Her eyes was also big and round. Crap, why do I keep staring at her eyes, Ryosuke slapped himself mentally.
It was still raining when Kanako enjoyed her desserts. "It's still raining." Kanako sighed as she munched her last bite of crêpe au chocolat.
"My parents will get mad if I'm home late." she continued.
"How about sending a notice to your parents? Calling them will do." Ryosuke gave advice after serving some dishes to the other costumer.
"Yeah, and they'll rush to this place. I just don't like it when my parents got into trouble because of their daughter's carelessness."
"Isn't that good. They're so care about their daughter."
Kanako shrugged. She dug her bag to find her cellphone. She dialed numbers connecting to her parents. As what she have guessed before, her parents will pick her up. So she give her parents complete address of the restaurant, with Ryosuke's help of course.
"Man, your parents are awesome. Willing to pick you up in the middle of the rain like this." Ryosuke felt awestruck.
"Really?" Kanako just smiled. "Aside from that Ryosuke-kun, seriously, your cooking are really awesome too."
"Well, yeah. Thanks to my parents." Ryosuke took a glimpse to another direction while putting his hand in front of his chest.
"Your parents are awesome too."
"Really?" Ryosuke talked back like what Kanako said earlier. Kanako rolled her eyes responding to oh-so-not-creative Ryosuke's answer to her compliment.
They chatted for thirty minutes. Until Kanako came to a conclusion that Ryosuke is not only mastered in cooking but also mastered in talking while cooking.
"So, you were on your way home from college?" asked Ryosuke.
"Uh-huh."
"What major do you attend?"
"Huh? Are you interrogating me? It's actually inte.." Kanako couldn't complete her sentence when the door is creaked open. She was dumbfounded when she saw someone standing in front of the door.
"Kou-chan?"
"Kana-chan! I'm here to pick you up."
"Huh? Your dad is so young." Ryosuke mistaken Kou-chan for Tou-chan. It's not clear whether it's just his mere mistake or his complete idiocy.
Ignoring to what Ryosuke's said just now, Kanako bade a goodbye for him and his sister and left.
"She already has a boyfriend, huh." Ryosuke said to himself as a couple of lyrics registered to his ears.
Mr. Raindrop, falling away from me now
Mr. Raindrop, falling away from me now
Do yo know how much you mean to me, why must you leave
I'm just a flower on a tree, why must you leave
...
Ryosuke thought something was wrong. Who the hell played this song which it's supposed to be classical music? Ryosuke take a look at the music player. His sister smiled mischievously. A vein popped on Ryosuke's head.
"Nee-chan! Why on earth you change the music?"
"Well, to comfort a brokenhearted chef? Pffft..." His sister chuckled.
"You! Who the hell is brokenhearted?" Ryosuke pouted.
His sister left a giggle.
