Last weekend my parents went to a garage sale and bought me four square canvases for a dollar. (Aren't they sweet.) Since they're all the same size and shape I wanted to do a series of four and figured something using face-cards and Ace would be cool. I'm still gesso-ing the canvases and making sketches but figured I'd do a little research on cards since I'd never really thought about them.
Two colors, black and red, represent night and day.
Four suits, four seasons in a year.
Twelve face cards, twelve months in the year.
Thirteen cards in each suit, thirteen weeks in each season.
52 cards in a deck, right? 52 weeks in a year.
The points of each card adds up to 365. 365 days in a year.
The symbols on the cards are for four economic classes of the middle ages. Heart, clergy. Diamond, trade. Club, agriculture. Spade, military. (You'd think those last two would be switched right?)
According to some sources the different kings and queens and jacks represent actual different historical people.
IS THIS SHIT CRAZY OR AM I JUST SIMPLE?!
