Saw the movie with a friend yesterday. I love seeing movies after reading the books. I either get to be satisfied with how they pulled things off or righteously angered at the mistakes. Both are satisfying.
The movie is really well done and pretty much dead on to the book. There were a few little quirks, like really!dramatic!music! during not so exciting moments. And really saturated colors which made some horrific imagery not so hard to watch, (am I watching Scorsese or Pushing Dasies? Geez.) But other than that, it was really true and made for some good movie watching. I thought it was going to be scarier than it was, but then I knew what was going on and all. There is a lot of dark around-the-corner jumpiness in an asylum for the criminally insane and all.
DiCaprio is good in the roll but I enjoyed Mark Ruffalo (omg, so cute!) and Ben Kingsley more
There is a big ass twist at the end, and it's very nicely set up. I think some clues could have been more subtle but it's hard to tell since I knew it.
So yeah, Teddy's actually a patient on the island and they've set up this huge roll play to try to break him out of his delusion, etc. etc. It was fun knowing everything all along, but I also would have liked to see it not knowing. The guessing and second guessing that the book made me do would've been fun in watching.
I do think all of the dreams and flashbacks were really well done on screen.
The conclusion at the end was pretty heartbreaking, as it was in the book. Teddy seems to have slipped back into the protective story he's set up for himself, but when he asks "Chuck" if it's better to live as a monster or die as a man, GAH! He knows. I guess it's debatable as to whether or not he knows, but I know he really knows and doesn't want to live with knowing. So sad. My friend was sad too, but she really liked it. Her first words were. "He knows for real now right? But.....but now Ben Kingsley will lose faith his psychology!!!" *pets Ben Kingsley.*
I don't know if I'll tune in to the Oscars tonight. I don't think I've ever made it through a whole awards show and there's nothing I'm super rooting for. I hope "The Hurt Locker" wins best picture. Mostly because I don't want "Avatar" to win. Yes, it was visually spectacular, but it's basically every single Colonialism story ever. With cheesy dialogue.
