Feminism / Femo-Nazism, and the Gig

Note: I tried to post this at FOD (amongst many other things). So here it is here (what does this tell you? Of course, that FOD is a sucky ass piece of crap! *g* What else?).

feminism n. advocacy of equal rights and opportunities for women, esp. the extension of their activities in social and political life.

I have noticed lately (say, last few years or so :p) that many people seem to be scared or ashamed of feminists and feminism. Something I hear people say often is, “She’s not a feminist or anything,” or, “Hell no, I’m not a feminist, sheesh!”

I have a question for you. What is so bad about being a feminist? Is everyone who says “I’m not a feminist” really happy to let women have less rights than men? Because, if we are going by the above definition of the word, then that is just what they are saying. Feminism is not evil, people - in fact, it’s a bloody good thing from my point of view.

I think the problem is that people are now equating “feminism” with “femo-nazism” or whatever you wanna call it. Being a feminist is not the same as being a femo-nazi psychopath with too much time on his or her hands (usually, in my experience, femo-nazis are seen as female lunatics who pick up on very little detail of what they perceive as exploitation or unfair stereotype; sometimes people are unfairly stereotyped as femo-nazis, other times there is a little more justification to this charge).

Just one last thing on this topic. I think that men can be feminists too. Feminists are not just women. Feminists are people who want women to have the same opportunities as men, within reason (e.g. it would be a little silly for women to start shouting out against not being able to wear condoms during sex, or the like). So what is so wrong with being a feminist?

I just have to mention something about the silverchair concert. Or maybe a few things :P Firstly, during “Anthem”, there were images flashing up on the big screen that loudly suggested (without sound of course, as the song was being played at the time) that the band is anti-war and definitely anti-Bush and anti-Howard and anti-Blair. For all I am much gratified! Also, they played the most awesome version of “Petrol and Chlorine” I’ve ever heard - a beautiful mixture of soft and loud, unlike the album version. And “Ana’s Song”, oh wow!! It started off a bit acousticy and then went full-band in a major way. Damn it, they rocked!!
