What do you wear to work?

It does vary as you describe, I think. What's your subject? Mine is agricultural and I share a Faculty with a lot of ecologists, so there are many people who want to dress at all times as though they were doing fieldwork. Whereas I take my cue from the way farmers put their best suit on for shows. Anyway I just *like* wearing suits! I've often had the conversation:
Me: Will this be a chance for me to put my pinstripes on?
AN Other Scientist: No, it's not really necessary. You don't need to bother.
Me: But I want to wear my pinstripes!
And then I get colleagues asking my advice about where to shop for a nice, affordable suit :-) because they've noticed that when I put mine on, I look the bee's knees. I've walked into the cattle lines at a show and had people do a double-take, wondering who this important person might be.
I'm envious of my stepson whose job, in the City of London, involves dressing to the nines every day. For academic work, esp when teaching, I think it's important as you say, not to look as though you're nipping off in your lunch break for a job interview! And not to intimidate the students. But I also think it's important to wear your high self-esteem.
