Don't Mourn. Organize

I don't believe that anything nefarious or controversial has occurred to alter these election results. President Bush has handily defeated his challenger in what seems to be a vote of support for many of his policies.

But I don't believe that most of the people who voted for President Bush were voting to strip away women's rights or strip mine Yellowstone national park just as I don't believe that too many people voted for Kerry because he's opposed to a constitutional amendment against gay marriage or supports increased job training for welfare recipients. Americans like it simple, and in between getting the kids to school, making sure the older ones aren't taking drugs or driving into trees, and debating whether or not to put Grandma in a home its hard to blame most of them.

Most of the votes for President Bush in this election were cast because he's southern, folksy, and a wartime president. Most of the votes for Kerry in this election were because he's not his opponent. Kerry lost because you can't win an argument simply by being against the other side, and he and the entire Democratic party seem incapable of projecting a straightforward, coherent vision for the future that would add some substance too that.

At this moment in time, the two parties could more appropriately be named the Republicans and the Anti-Republicans, but unlike physics the two don't just cancel each other out. The Republican party is eating the liberal half of this country alive, like a boa unhinging its jaw to envelop something that simply seems to large for it to swallow.

Liberal America is the America that ended slavery, that gave women the right to vote, that integrated schools, that ended the cold war, that made it possible for people to retire and for 9 year-olds not to work 60 hours a week on their hands and knees. Every time anyone takes a breath of air and doesn't gag or takes a drink of water and doesn't choke should thank the highest power they feel comfortable addressing that Liberal America was there. Every time you are in a car accident and don't die, hug your neighborhood liberal. Every time you listen to what you want to listen too, read what you want to read, say what you want to say, and believe what you want to believe, give credit to liberal america.

Liberal America is far too important, and far too big for that boa constrictor to swallow, and its about time we stood up in its mouth and let it know.
