I already missed the Christmas post so I won't miss the New Years post.
So what do I think of the new year? Well... I suppose it can be useful as a new lease on life, but every day can be one if you look at things the right way. Not to mention that viewpoint seems to cast the past and present in a negative light. You don't rally if you're winning the game. And without that rally, the New Year just seems like another day. And if it's just another day then it seems like an odd ritual for us to engage in, putting so much stock in the turnover of some vast, arbitrary calendar. Hoo boy, I get to go from the Far Side 2005 calendar to the Far Side 2006! It's such a mundane moment in reality, and yet for that last minute, we all catch our breaths and wait, a wave of breathlessness sweeping the world in time-zone intervals.
I dunno... I already feel slightly wary of the construct of time so to emphasize the passage so accutely... it's like the whole world is setting its watch, the final ticks of the clock resounding through our minds as we all get ready to hit "Start" on the new year. We are all beholden to it and we all follow it, regardless. I truly wish I could spend a week of my life without ever looking at a clock. I'm sick of time being dictated by clocks. Well, it IS more efficient, I'll give it that. But it puts everyone in such a hurry, forces them along life with the constant reminder that it's passing them by.
*sigh*
It just all feels slightly Orwellian, in the regulatory sense. I suppose I'm being a bit of a Luddite, but sometimes the system is just a bit overwhelming. New Years is just one big hooray for standards, in my opinion. But that's my opinion, and I could be quite wrong. Perhaps I've left something out which should be accounted for. In fact, I know I've neglected most of what should be accounted for on the issue.
Just something I was thinking about.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
