Wedding traditions:

*"Magic Hanky" is carried by the bride and is turned into a christening bonet for the first baby and turned back into a Hanky for that child to carry on their wedding day. (Irish)

*Myrtle branches given by bride to bridesmaids. If sprouts when planted, girl would marry within the year. (Irish)

*At the end of the wedding day, the couple may shatter a vase or glass into many pieces to represent the number of years they will be happily married to each other. (Italian)

*The groom often chooses a flower for his buttonhole which also occurs in the bride’s bouquet. This is a vestige of the time when a knight would wear his lady’s colour to display his love. (Austrian)

*Sometime during the vows, when the couple are on their knees, the groom might kneel on his brides wedding dress to show who will be 'wearing the pants' in the relationship. When they stand, the bride might step on her groom's foot to show otherwise. (Germany)

*It is traditional for the bride to braid her hair, as this is considered a sacred way to keep feminine power and luck. (Ireland)

*Give your bridesmaids lanterns to carry instead of flowers (China)

* On the wedding eve, an old Czech tradition involves the bridesmaids gathering to make the bride's wreath by binding rosemary twigs together, although they can be made by the mother or grandmother as well. Today, wreaths of baby's breath and tiny roses are seen on the bride as well as her bridesmaids, a variation of the rosemary wreath.

Other Ideas:

*Have 7 candles (3 on my side, 4 on Leander's) near the unity candle to represent the grandparents who couldn't see us get married.

* Display wedding pictures of both sets of parents and/or grandparents (or those who are gone?) or baby pictures of yourselves with them either next to your cake and guest book.
