[2ND] barrel - hard work is hard

Jul 07, 2011 23:40

[Marie is on the front porch of the farmhouse she's moved into. She has a pouch full of medals and materia from Eiji and Yuffie that she has to figure out how to reverse engineer, and basket full of materials to make a sign for Shoutarou. She's got papers secured under small rocks all around her with half-drawn maps and partially written recipes ( Read more... )

[Eiji walks over to Marie's farmhouse and knocks on one of the wooden bannisters]

Ah, Marie-san?

Is this your workshop?

A-Ah!

[Marie jumps, having been so absorbed in trying to figure out what the hell to do that she didn't even notice him walk up.]

Mister Eiji!

My workshop? Eh-heh... Well, parts of it are.. sometimes...

[Eiji chuckles a bit.]

You're still settling in, I understand. I just wanted to help out a bit, maybe.

Ah! That would really be great.

Man, everyone here is so nice! Everyone wants to help out and no one's even charging me!

Ah, well, I guess it's something like...

We're all in the same boat and not a lot of people know what to do. So those people are drawn to the ones with plans.

I guess... I don't really have much of a plan.

I just don't want to stop working in case Professor Ingrid or Master Kreis show up. If they caught me slacking off, I'd be done for!

It looks like a plan and that's the important part, I guess.

I guess. That's kind of how things always seem to work out for me...

Ah, it's usually like that for me too...

Plans don't usually go in my favor.

Me either. I'm much better at winging it. A lot of people make fun of me for it sometimes, but I think it's part of the reason that Professor Ingrid wants me teaching the Advanced Practical labs once I've got the hang of being a teacher.

Ahh... coming up with plans on the fly generally work better for me. Big plans generally don't work out for me, as hard as I try...

...Anyway... part of the reason I came was that I think I needed to give you a good example of how these medals work so you know what to look for and how to make them.

Ah! That would be really really great. Reverse engineering is not my strongest talent, and between the medals and these other things I've got, I'm really stumped!

Well, ah...

[Eiji hefts up a medajalibur and sticks it in the ground.] This is one of the devices built to take cell medal input and convert their energy.

...Ah! Okay!

[She's quickly taking notes, writing down what she's being told and creating parallels to things she already understands.]

[Eiji lifts it up and walks off a bit before swinging it down into a large rock. It behaves like one would expect a sword to behave when striking a rock. That is, not too much of an effect.]

Like this, it's just a normal sword.... ah, but I guess we need the proper comparison...

[Eiji pulls out a belt-buckle with three circular holes in them.]

This is the Os Driver. It's what I use for the Core Medals I have.

[Eiji puts the belt on, which instantly snaps around his waist, generating its own belt seemingly from nowhere. On his right hip is a large black disk with a gold outline and a handgrip. His left has a small cylindrical container from which he draws out three core medals, Red, Yellow and Green. He slots the red and green in together before holding the yellow up and slotting it in last.]

Ahh... this will be a bit strange, so bare with me, okay?

[Marie watches all of this. But she doesn't seem the slightest bit concerned. Her expression is more one of fascination. She's still jotting notes, but she doesn't seem to nee to look away from him to do that.]

...Strange? ...Well, okay.
