The Polish Prince

So I am here at work and suddenly my polish side screams at me. FOOD you want food from your homeland!!! So yeah I am craving pierogis, goulash, my dad's roast pork. Looks like I will be line to the store and get pierogi fixins and make a batch. Nice dark beer, hot pierogis, sourkraut, bit of apple sauce and sour cream.... mmmmm.

Most times I don't get urges for certain foods but every once in a blue moon it hits me. Bubble and squeak or shnitzel. And the hard hitters are always from my blood. Irish, Scot, German and Polish funny enough in equal parts of cravings. Then that drop of french sneaks in and I want pate, escargo, etc. It makes me wonder because I have and enjoyed almost every type of food out there. I think of my self of a bit of a foodie but even though those foods from far off lands or even next door countries that I grew up eating are good I never get the HUNGER for them like those above. It is not like I grew up on Irish or German food. If it came form my mom's kitchen it was bland and most likely burnt. My dad even though he is a good cook the only think that was close was his pork roast. So it is not an ingrained comfort food. But rather something deeper. Like to say my genes and ancestors are calling from the past. "Young Rediski you need food from your homeland. Come eat and rekindle your link."

Is it a culture thing? I don't see show I am second and fourth gen American.

Is it a SCA thing? Well we do try to link our selves to the past but in most cases it is about the history. This feels deeper.

Is it another unknown influence? We are taught about our histories by our families. Even if most of them can't even boil water there is a link to the food of that culture. If most parts of the US you still have these links strained as they are in some places. San Diego is not a place where you have a lot of food from Europe. Those that we do have are small and cling to keeping open (sausage king for example).

Course growing up here in san diego I have my other comfort foods. Pho when I am sick, mexican which I never get tired of. Middle eastern and asian that I eat all the time. But they don't have that connection that link that when I eat it feed more then my body but a part of my soul. Even with beers. A good irish stout had more weight to it then one just as good from the US. They are made the same way they even will taste a lot alike but there is something missing when you have that crave. Most times you don't think about it but deep in my soul there is a part that needs to be sated from time to time.
