There was this fanfiction I read back in 2002, a WIP which I for whatever reason didn't carry on reading or stopped tracking as I thought it got abandoned. I've rediscovered it a few days ago and realised that it got picked up again.
The author's name rang a (good) bell, so I delved back into it - and after all those years I actually still remembered parts of it! Now, that might be a good thing, but I was struck by how OOC everyone was (of course, the story is AU having been started before OOTP, and yes the author warns that it's AU and OOC) and how I just couldn't enjoy it. And I wonder whether I simply didn't care about such things back then when I started reading fanfiction, because I just wanted to read anything that was SS/HG, or if that was the reason I stopped following the story in the first place. Or maybe it was just the overuse of the word "bat" ;).
With all 7 books being out now and the characters having grown up/old/dead, I want to see them written like that - I don't want to read about a 25+ old Hermione with the same characteristics of a 14-year-old, because that's all we had back then. I want the main characters in a story to have some depth, to have "lived", and not have their age doubled with their personality left unchanged.
I hope I'm not asking too much....
