a way out?

Yesterday morning, a 56-year-old guy from our bank ran amok and shot various people of his department before killing himself. Two senior members of the management (41 and 45 years old, both married and with kids) were so seriously injured that they died in hospital.

It happened on the other side of town, so I only heard and read about it through rumours, intranet and newspapers/radio. What shocks me more than the fact that it happened within the same company is, though, that I used to work with one of the two who got shot and killed. It's not as if I spent much time thinking about him in the last five years (not at all, even) - it's that in my memories he's alive and laughing about his own crappy jokes and I just can't imagine that he'll never do that again. And I think of his wife and kid(s?) and feel so sorry for them.

Why does something like this have to happen? What drove that man so mad as not only to kill himself but deliberately and intentionally harm other people/his colleagues and thus their families? Could this happen to anyone? What about you?
