Yesterday, my dad called me after lunch to talk, which is rare - 'at work' and 'long talk' are the keywords - unless he has something big enough to tell me. The 'big' matter turned out to be that the desktop at home was attacked by a virus, and AVG was giving 'Trojan' warning. He said about 2000 files were infected, according to a certain virus scanning program. He also mentioned the last thing he did was getting a prompt to install some spyware-removal stuff when he went to YouTube.
At the mention of "2000 files infected", my mind went straight to my downloaded stuff which I have yet to burn - Shinhwa solo activities clips, MY RICSYUNG COLLECTION, subbed [Come to Play: Old School Special], subbed [Johnny's Sports Day 2003], and tons others! - but since there was nothing I could do at that moment, I took a deep breath and told him to just shut it down and I would look at it later when I got home. He sounded apologetic, but I did not hate nor blame him. More like, frustration was eating me. The whole time, I was praying hard those files were just systems data, so I could just reinstall a fresh Windows and still had my files at other partitions safe.
To anyone concerned, I managed to get rid of it later. The depression's gone. <3
Apparently, there's this trend of rogue security software around lately, in addition to the ever annoying spyware and malware. It disguises itself as a 'helpful tool to fend off malicious virus' for you, but is actually the culprit. Mine was attacked by
Virus Response Lab 2009. I read that some victims were fooled to give their credit card numbers to 'purchase the full version for extra protection' which turned out to be a scam, leaving both their credit card and PC vulnerable and open for worse situations.
It's a Wolf wearing a Sheep's skin. Evil in the name of Good. How horrifyingly disgusting. (I was not referring to hating wolves.)
Probably Mulder was right; Trust No One. I believe in the good of people more, though, but it is always good to take precautions. Earned trust is often better than demanded trust, anyway. =)
