Can you tell I'm avoiding my essay like all hell? I need a procrastination icon.icefalconJune 8 2006, 06:05:00 UTC
I was perverted before fandom. >XD
Also, fandom may give you a broader experience base, but it doesn't necessarily open your mind - just look at ship wars. Sometimes people just find a larger space in which to be narrow minded in.
Corruption might be a good word though, because through fandom a lot of people become exposed to new ideas, new people, new concepts that are might not crop up in normal real life. This applies a lot to fic, because when a fandom gets big enough, or when people have been in different fandoms over time, the same kinds of cliches pop up. So, people try to re-invent pairings, and reinvent sex scenes, for something a little bit different.
Because fandom isn't real, as an intellectual exercise a lot of these kinds of practices get explored even though people have no intention of going anywhere near that specific practice in real life. I love Sasuke/Itachi, but the thought of having sex with my own brother is repulsive, and I certainly don't want my partner to break my ribs as a sign of affection. Incidentally, I think it's important to note that as we know what we're reading isn't real, the blasé nature that a lot of us take towards different kinds of kink and perversion is to an extent misleading.
Ultimately? I maintain that after my four years in the Harry Potter fandom (or any fandom sufficiently large enough, that was my huge one - Naruto's not quuuuiite there yet) that nothing can ever squick or surprise me anymore. Once you've read that Whomping Willow/Giant squid or that Lucius/Draco squickfic, then yeah. I don't know how to go lower, unless someone writes a HP version of '120 days of Sodom'. And even then, I'm not convinced it hasn't been done yet.
Don't worry, I do it all the time too.farfallaneraJune 9 2006, 01:23:23 UTC
Lucky. Fandom perverted my young, innocent mind. :D
Good point. I hadn't thought of it that way. I do agree that there is a clear line between fandom and real life and unfortunately a lot of fanbrats don't take that into mind. >_>
