Regardless of how you personally feel on the subject of Haiti, I have been incredibly moved by the situation down there. I have seen the best of people, and unfortunately I have also seen the worse. Humanity has sickened me in the past couple of days, and I get that some of you just won't care but sometimes your words are just too much, and too hurtful and hateful and I don't get how ANYONE can see that amount of suffering and say shitty things about it. I got this from ONTD and I agree 100%:
For those of you forwarding this "shame on you America" bullshit:
Never let it be said that I'm not kind enough to fire a warning shot. Someone on my friends list posted that absolute nonsense about how we all shouldn't be donating to Haiti because of poor conditions already existing in our First World Nation.
Consider this my stock response, then kindly remove yourselves from my life because I don't wish to associate with those who would condemn charity.
(fwiw, I couldn't care less if you don't agree with charity or my stance. This is roughly my view, and I am open minded enough to acknowledge that there are always differing opinions. I am not looking to remove people or lose friends because my opinion is different than yours.)
Read on:
Haiti is a third world country with nothing resembling a competant infrastructure. You know who is at fault for the conditions in that country? The United States and France.
When Haiti was struggling to get on their feet as a free republic after freeing themselves from slavery, France demanded reparations for their loss in income and property in the amount of 150 million gold francs. Their "loss of income and property" was due to the slaves rebelling and freeing themselves. Haiti would not be recognized as a sovereign nation by any other world power, including the United States, until they paid back the money that France lost. Years later, the US put Aristide into power there. Twice. He is largely at fault for the conditions found within that country today.
We have programs and such within our own country that have been put into place to help the needy, flawed as they are- they are still there. We have organizations in place to take care of the homeless, to feed hungry children, to give medication to the elderly, and to treat the mentally ill. Hundreds of organizations just in New Jersey alone. Do you donate significant time or money to these programs?
Haiti does not have these things at all. They have nothing within their country to help bail them out of situations like the two earthquakes that hit them this month, let alone programs to help feed their hungry and clothe their poor. Nothing. Before the earthquakes, poverty was so rampant in Haiti that people were eating dirt in an effort to get what little nutrients they could out of the soil.
Their entire country has just about been completely destroyed and people have the audacity to question and call shame on those who wish to help. You are calling shame on people who want to help others live. You are calling shame on those who want to alleviate the pain of those who have had their entire lives destroyed. You are calling shame on the practice of charity. Do you not see how fucked up that is?
Next time you see some bullshit forwarding post that serves no purpose other then to spread narrow sighted misinformation that has its roots in bigotry, do a little bit of research first. And if you, or anyone else who has forwarded this crap, is so incredibly concerned about the state of charity within your home country, then get off your ass and do something about it instead of pissing and moaning on Facebook.
