But plenty of others have. Recently, even. What would be the point in believing them if no one had ever met them?

Well, and the language. Supposedly the first Sages were touched by the Precursors as well, but as there aren't any left to say I can't very well be certain of that. Regardless, it was just...basic things. Rudimentary things.
Something had to create your ancestors; whether they stayed around to make themselves known or moved on is the difference.
