Conclusion
Andrea came back to where Daria and Donna were. There was a lull in their activity. “Quinn is up to something. I’m sure of it.”
“I knew that,” Daria said.
“And she’s obstinate in her disowning of you.”
“Not unexpected,” Daria said with a sigh.
However, Sandi chose that moment to approach them. “Hello, Daria or something?”
“Hi,” Daria said warily.
“What is it, Sandi?” Donna asked.
“What are you and Brittany, like, up to?” Sandi asked.
“What do you mean?” Donna asked.
“You’re clearly up to something.”
“No, we’re not!” Andrea added.
Sandi gave a dubious look. “Whatever it is, I will find out.” She then turned on her heel and walked away.
“What was that about?” Daria asked.
“Sandi is one of those ‘popular’ girls,” Donna answered.
“I see.”
“She’s also a trouble maker,” Andrea explained.
“Why am I not surprised.”
The party went well for the next half hour. But there was indeed trouble afoot. Jamie, Joey and Jeffy were getting more annoyed at each other as they jockeyed for Quinn’s attention. Quinn thought they were cute fighting each other, but it was getting out of hand and drawing attention. “Guys, guys, stop fighting!” she said. “This is terrible.”
Brittany came to Andrea. “The Three J’s have started fighting for Quinn’s attention!”
“On it!” Andrea said.
“They’re fighting over me,” Quinn said to the several people who were looking on.
Andrea then forced her way through. “Jefferson! Joseph! James!”
The three paused upon hearing their full names. “It’s Jamie!” the last named one groused.
“Stop fighting,” Andrea said.
Jeffy blushed. “Um…”
“He started it!” Joey said pointing at Jamie.
“I didn’t!” Jamie objected.
“You did!” Joey stated again.
“Stop!” Andrea projected.
The trio and Quinn looked at her. “OK, we’ll stop,” Jeffy said.
“Of course,” Joey said, looking ashamed.
Quinn glared at Andrea.
Andrea raised an eyebrow and said; “I know you had something to do with this!”
“No, I didn’t,” Quinn denied, turning her head to the side.
“That’s short of the truth and you know it,” Andrea countered.
“Take that back!” Quinn exclaimed.
Andrea could see Jeffy and Joey backing away. “No.”
“I’m not a liar,” Quinn said. “My pants aren’t alight, or whatever.”
“I know I can’t prove it,” Andrea said.
“Your word against mine,” Quinn said, with an edge to her voice.
“But I know you have been egging Joey, Jeffy and Jamie on.”
“So what? One has to draw attention in some way!” Quinn blabbed.
Andrea raised her eyebrow again.
“Oops,” Quinn murmured. She put herself in some kind of defensive stance.
She didn’t recognise that stance, but then she was hardly an expert in martial arts. ‘What? She wants to fight me? Or is it a bluff?’
Jeffy watched as Quinn and Andrea stood off against each other. ‘Are they going to fight, or what?’
After a short stand-off, Quinn backed off. “Later,” she said.
Andrea gave her a look that seemed to say; ‘let’s see about that.’ She then turned to him and the other two. “Now! I don’t want to come over to break you three up again.”
“He started it!” Joey accused.
“He did not!” Jamie said.
“It doesn’t matter who started it!” Andrea projected. “What did I just say?”
“Right…” Joey considered.
Andrea left Quinn and the Three J’s. “Manipulative little princess…” she mumbled. She wondered how she and Daria were so different.
Of course, while that was going on, Sandi and Tori weren’t idle. Sandi caught the trail end of Andrea’s conversation with Quinn. ‘It would have been unbecoming of a Fashion Club member to get a physical altercation,’ she thought. ‘Another time.’
“Not surprising,” Daria said after Andrea had explained her confrontation with Quinn.
“Really?” Donna asked.
Daria nodded. “Growing up in Highland has affected us in different ways.”
“Still, she must be a handful.”
“Mom and I know how to handle her…” Daria responded.
Andrea wasn’t sure how to respond to that. She looked to Brittany, who had a thoughtful expression on her face. ‘Obviously thinking about Brian,’ she thought.
“Hopefully they won’t fight again,” Donna said.
Sandi came up to Quinn. “What were you doing?” she asked.
“What do you mean, Sandi?”
“You were about to fight Andrea.”
“Is that her name? And I wasn’t!”
“Yes! That is her name, and yes, you were about to fight her. Like, you can’t obfuscate with me.”
Quinn raised an eyebrow. ‘Challenge accepted,’ she thought. “Maybe. But she was being really unnerving!”
“That’s no excuse.”
‘Maybe not to you.’ Quinn considered. “I guess not. Like I suppose I should have ignored her.”
“Exactly.”
“Right…” Quinn said. She turned with a flip of her hair and walked away.
Sandi sighed.
Unknown to those at the Taylors, would be gate crashers pulled up to the Crewe Neck gatehouse. “What are you punks doing here?” the guard asked.
“Party!”
“You’re not invited. You’re not coming in.”
Despite the guard’s protests, the gate crashers literally crashed their way through…
The Taylor Mansion wasn’t that far into the estate, so it wasn’t long before their presence was heard.
The first Brittany, Donna, Daria and Andrea knew that anything was wrong was when they heard the front door being slammed open.
“What was that?” Daria asked.
“Gatecrashers!” Andrea deadpanned.
“Oh no!” Brittany exclaimed. “We haven’t planned for this!”
“It hasn’t happened before?” Daria asked.
“No,” Brittany answered. She turned to Donna. “Call the police.”
“Sure,” Donna said. She went to the phone.
The gatecrashers were quite disruptive, interrupting conversations and dance routines. Joey and Jamie turned on one of them after he tried to dance with Quinn.
“Guy’s. I don’t think that is a good idea!” Quinn said.
“Looks like you caused a problem, Quinn,” Sandi said.
“No, I didn’t, Sandi,” Quinn said with an eye on Jeffy, who looked like he was going to join the fray with his friends.
“Fine I will dance with someone else!” the other guy said when he looked at Jeffy.
Donna came back to her friends. “They will be here in five minutes.”
“That’s quick,” Brittany said.
“Huh?” Daria asked.
“Last time they took fifteen minutes,” Brittany answered.
“I see,” Daria said.
They could then hear more commotion. Jodie Landon came running over. “I think Kevin is going to do something stupid with gatecrashers.”
Brittany sighed. “I’ll tell him to go home.”
“What about Mack?” Donna asked.
“He’s been trying to keep it in check, but there was one ‘Mack Daddy’ too many and he said he’d had enough for tonight,” Jodie explained as Brittany went off to find her boyfriend.
“Huh?” Daria said again.
“Kevin often calls him ‘Mack Daddy’, which he doesn’t like at all,” Donna explained.
“The depths of stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me,” Daria commented.
“Same here,” Andrea said.
Brittany found Kevin ready to make a charge against one of the gatecrashers. “Kevie!”
“Huh? Babe! These people are totally wrecking your party!”
“I know that,” she said as she looked at the mess they were making. “But fighting them won’t help! Go home. The Police will be here shortly.”
“Oh man!”
“Go home!”
Jodie and Mack made themselves scarce before the Police arrived, leaving before Kevin and the Three Js.
Brittany and Donna were at the front door as the two police cruisers pulled up. A female police officer came up to them. “Gatecrashers?” she asked.
“Yes,” Brittany answered.
The gatecrashers were soon arrested for trespassing, but the house was a mess. “This is going to take a while!” Brittany groused.
“I’ll help,” Andrea said.
“I knew you would,” Brittany said.
Donna and then Daria also pitched in.
The party was over, Quinn and her admirers left the Taylor’s after the police did. “It was a good night,” Joey said.
“Not as good as it could have been,” Quinn said.
“What do you mean?” Joey asked.
“That Andrea, accusing me of trying to stir up trouble!”
“I see,” Joey responded.
“How are you getting home?”
“Jeffy’s sister. She can take you too.”
“That would be good,” Quinn considered.
Several hours later, the house was still messy. Daria, Brittany, Donna and Andrea were exhausted.
“When is Ashley Amber home again?” Donna asked.
“She’ll be home in the morning,” Brittany answered with a twirl of her hair, which was starting to come out of the pigtails. “About eleven. Dad will be home in the evening.”
“We should be able to get it done before she gets home,” Andrea said, “but I’m beat.”
Brittany nodded. “We’ll start again in the morning,” she said as she collapsed into a couch.
Ashley Amber arrived home, after picking up Brian from a babysitter, after eleven. She noticed Donna’s car out front. ‘Something may have happened at the party,’ she thought. As she entered, she saw Brittany and her friends, including the new girl, Daria, resting. She could tell that some cleaning had occurred earlier, as some of the furniture was still out of place. “How was the party, honey?”
“It was great! But there were gatecrashers,” Brittany answered.
“We had to call the police,” Donna added.
“Oh!” Ashley Amber said. “I’m going to have follow up on that.”
“Sure,” Brittany said.
“And I’ll help put things back when you’re ready,” Ashley Amber said.
Brittany nodded.
“Thanks,” Donna said.
Ashley Amber unpacked before helping the teens finish their post-party tidying. That only took about forty-five minutes. “Daria, right?” she asked the bespectacled brunette, as the latter was getting ready to leave.
“Yes,” the girl said in a weary tone. “Your stepdaughter was very helpful in helping me settle into my new school.”
“Brittany has been helpful of others as long as I have known her,” Ashley Amber said.
Daria nodded, as Brittany came over.
“Thanks for helping, Daria,” Brittany said. “Both last night and this morning.”
“It was, an experience,” Daria said.
Brittany frowned, a little.
“One that I would like to repeat in future,” Daria added, with a Mona Lisa smile. “Just not too soon.”
Brittany nodded. “See you tomorrow, Daria.”
