The first film based on the rebooted games and the third film overall. The beginning was rather good, establishing Lara as one who is determined to prove herself against the world (and to do anything to survive on her own terms against what London can throw against her). The flashback scenes of her childhood are quite well done here (and serves as effective foreshadowing of what comes later). The outcome of the 'fox race' was well conceived. The appearance of her father's assistant (and Director of her father's company), was also well done.
The fact that Lara misses her father and wants to know what happened to him is well established, and her investigation into what he had been up to is what leads her to investigate first hand where he went. The scenes in Hong Kong were well done, showing more of Lara's determination and willingness to go up against near impossible odds. More of this is shown during the storm that the Endurance gets caught up in as it approaches Yamatai. But it's what happens on Yamatai that is the main part of the film, where Lara has to face the crucible, as it were.
The villain, Vogel, was portrayed rather well, with a similar determination to Lara. There are parallels between the two, both are motivated by family. Lara to save her father, and Vogel to see his daughters again. All in all, a movie worth seeing. 8.5.
