43 Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Rewatch. The fifth Star Trek movie. Considered one of the worst of the franchise. Spock's half-brother instigates an insane quest for a mythical planet. Kirk and his crew have to confront their inner pain. It is a good concept, but the execution leaves some things to be desired. Each part is presented well, but Shatner's direction isn't as good as Nimoy's, Meyer's or Wise's. The interactions between the various plots aren't that well realised compared to the other films. First, Sybok's quest, which drives the main plot of the film.
It is one which many people would go on if they had the chance (and were rather philosophical). However the execution is rather hokey. Maybe it could have been written better? Was Shatner up to it? Maybe not. However, the start of the film on Nimbus III is interesting. It sets up the plot, leading the audience to ask 'Who is this Vulcan who's different to Spock?' Then there are the scenes in Yosemite. Spock saving Kirk from his foolhardy attempt at climbing El Capitan is well done (although as depicted Kirk still slows down too quickly). The 'Row Row Your Boat' scene is also well done.
It shows that Kirk, Spock and McCpy are all great friends (with Kirk being a moderating influence between the two other men). The is also a theme that runs through the film. With Kirk's line of 'I've always known I'll die alone,' being important. Later, when Sybok affects the crew (Particularly McCoy, with the remembrance of what happened to his father...) this allows Kirk to fight back against him in his own way. Of course, there is also Captain Klag, who wants to fight a Starfleet Captain, and jumps at the chance to fight Kirk.
All these lead up to the end where the entity is defeated by a team effort. However, the overall film isn't as good as it's predecessors. 7/10.
