Chapter 56: Twelve Meets Ten
TARDIS (Twelfth, with Laranna, Libby and Mandy)
It had been some days, possibly a week, since they had met the Eleventh Doctor and Clara Oswald on Trenzalore. They had just left Elizabethan London, where Shakespeare hadn't seen Felicia during the Carrionites' attempt to use one of his plays to invade Earth.
“So, where next?” Libby asked.
“Back to New New York,” the Doctor said.
“You and Martha went there later?” Mandy asked.
“Yes,” the Doctor answered.
New New York
The TARDIS materialised in the Senate. The skeletons of the Senators were still there. Hame and the former Undercity denizens hadn't taken them away yet.
The Doctor exited the TARDIS and looked around. He found that Hame was still near the Face of Boe's corpse, mourning him. “Am I too soon?” he asked.
“Who are you?” Hame asked.
“The Doctor.”
“You don't look like him,” Hame said. She paused. “Wait.” She looked back to what remained of the Face. “He told me that you could change. I didn't believe him.”
The Doctor produced a picture of Felicia. “Did you see this girl with me or Martha?”
Hame took the picture and looked at it. “No,” she said.
“Thanks.”
“This is Libby Pond, calling Thomas Kincade Brannigan for the Doctor, come in Brannigan,”
He and Valerie were still looking for a place to land. “You better take that,” Valerie said.
Brannigan took the microphone. “This is Brannigan,” he said.
“Hi, Brannigan, could you come back to the Senate?”
“Why?”
“I have to ask you something for the Doctor. It involves a picture,” Libby said,
Brannigan looked to Valerie. She nodded.
“We're on our way.”
Libby and Laranna were waiting on the top of the Senate building. Brannigan landed the car next to them.
“Hi, I'm Brannigan,” he said after he got out.
“I'm Libby, and this is Laranna,” Libby said. She gave Brannigan a picture of Felicia. “Did you see this person with the Doctor?”
“I'm afraid not. Sorry for the disappointment,” Brannigan said.
“Quite alright, we we're used to disappointment by now,” Libby said.
“There's a story there,” Brannigan said.
“You could say that,” Libby said.
“Come in,” Brannigan invited.
“Sure,” Libby said.
Mandy came back to the Doctor who was still next to Hame where she was grieving for the Face. “Mandy?”
“No, Milo and Cheen didn't kidnap Felicia instead of Martha,” she said.
“Worth a shot,” the Doctor said.
Soon, Libby and Laranna returned. The Doctor decided to ask Hame if she could join him. “It would be better than staying here mourning for the Face,” he said.
“Oh, Doctor. It would be my pleasure,” Hame finally said.
“I'll have you back here within a day, after I have found Felicia,” the Doctor said.
TARDIS (enroute: New New York 5000000053 - New Amsterdam 1664)
“What are we doing?” Libby asked.
“New Amsterdam,” the Doctor answered. “Then we'll go forwards to New York City in 1932.”
“Is that the original New York?” Hame asked.
“Yes,” the Doctor answered.
13 September 1664
New Amsterdam
The TARDIS materialised north of the colony, in the space where Central Park would be centuries later.
“We're here,” the Doctor said.
“And you hope to avoid the temporal distortions this time?” Mandy asked.
“They'll still be there, but starting from within Manhattan should help,” the Doctor said.
“Temporal distortions?” Libby asked.
“You don't need to know,” the Doctor said.
TARDIS (enroute - New Amsterdam 1664 - New York City 1932)
“1700!” the Doctor said.
“Do you have to call out the numbers?” Hame asked.
“Yes! 1800!”
“1850!”
“1900!”
“1910!”
“1920!”
“1924!”
“1928!”
“1929!”
“1930!”
The temporal distortions began to buffet the TARDIS as it made its way upwhen.
“Come on old girl! This isn't like when we tried to approach from Mercy!”
“Mercy?” Hame asked.
“This is where you went before dropping off Vincent?” Libby asked.
“Vincent?” Hame asked.
“Shut up! Both of you!” The Doctor ordered. “1931!”
“It's a town,” Mandy said, answering Hame's first question.
“Almost there!”
Suddenly, the Doctor was thrown from the console...
Mandy and Laranna tried to get to the console, but they crashed into each other, and fell away.
Libby gained the console. “1932, but we're no longer in Manhattan!”
“Where are we?” the Doctor asked.
“I don't know.”
The TARDIS then crashed...
14 September 1932
Bermuda
“Looks like Bermuda,” the Doctor said, as he clambered out of the TARDIS.
“Bermuda? Great!” Libby said as she followed him out.
“We're still on Earth?” Hame said as she followed Libby out.
“Yes.”
Mandy and Laranna then followed them out.
“It'll take a while for her to recover.”
“Like on Nantucket?” Mandy asked.
“Not as long,” the Doctor answered.
“Do you remember being here as the Tenth?” Libby asked.
“Yes.”
After they had set the TARDIS back in an upright position, they set off across the fields in search of the earlier Doctor.
They turned a corner, and there he was. “Doctor!” the older Doctor called.
The younger Doctor turned. “Caecilus? How did you get to Burmuda? Wait! This isn't the 1st Century!”
“Guess again,” the older Doctor said.
Hame came forward.
“Hame?” The younger Doctor asked. He then came to a realisation. “Of course! Don't tell me!”
“Felicia,” the older Doctor said.
“Are all my future selves coming back looking for her?”
“Maybe,” the older Doctor said.
“She appeared just before Lazarus.”
“Of course! It wasn't just the temporal distortions that stopped us landing in New York this time.”
“New York? With Martha.”
“Yes. I have just picked up Hame from New Earth, after the Face of Boe's... passing.”
“Go on,” Libby said to the younger Doctor.
“As I said to our later self, Lazarus was defeated.”
“What was Lazarus doing?” Mandy asked.
“He wanted to change what it meant to be human,” the older Doctor said.
“He turned himself into a monster in the process,” the younger Doctor added.
Libby paused before asking. “What kind of Monster?”
“A scorpiony thing, that sucked the life from innocent bystanders!” the younger Doctor said.
“You don't want to have to deal with that kind of thing,” the older Doctor said.
“Of course not,” Libby muttered.
“And then we went to Pentallion, and the Federation universe with Voyager.”
“Great! And it was touch and go with the Borg as it was!” the older Doctor said.
“Borg?” Mandy asked.
“Like Cybermen, but with more of the original body preserved and linked together in a hive mind,” the younger Doctor answered.
Mandy nodded.
“So you protected Voyager and temporarily defeated the Collective?” the older Doctor asked.
“Yes. Then we returned and Felicia went further back,” the younger Doctor concluded.
“Then we'll continue to look for Felicia further back,” the older Doctor decided.
“Good luck,” the younger Doctor said.
“Thanks,” the older Doctor said.
The older Doctor and his companions arrived back at the TARDIS. “So, where now?” Libby asked once they had gone inside.
“London, 2005,” the Doctor answered as he laid in the coordinates.
