Cuba was extremely important to Spain. It was the central distribution point for slaves coming from Africa, and for sugar, coffee, and silver coming from the Americas. Ships would congregate offshore near one of the many forts, waiting until there were enough of them to run the pirate infested waters between Cuba and Europe.
