Chapter 5: Kyu Holds A Bunny

"Come on, Kyu! Let's go!" I tug on his hand childishly, pulling him forward with me through the long grass.

It has been really long since I went out. I can tell just by the air I'm breathing. It's like with every breath I take, the cobwebs in my brain just blow away. Kyu seems a little happier too (well, as happy as he can get, despite the fact that he seems more alive).

Plus my own condition isn't as painful. It's easier to will myself to try staying alive until Kyu has his heart.

The breeze blows little flower petals past my head, even though it's late winter. What is this place exactly, anyway? Even though they call it some sort of French name like... Jardin Botanique, it's not a zoo, aquarium, garden, or park. A combination of all four, I guess.

Kyu has never seen anything like this before. When you think about it, that's actually really sad.

"According to the data you gave me, animals are like you but not human?" Kyu asks.

"A little. They always look different. They can't talk to us, or do the same things that we do. But other than that, they're alive like us." I smile.

"You said I'm alive."

"Yes, I did."

"Would an animal recognize that I'm alive?"

Why must Kyu always ask difficult questions? My head hurts when I try to answer them...

Then we come to a petting cage. There are six bunnies inside it, with soft white fur and pink eyes.

I love bunnies.

An idea comes to my head, like a flash of lightning in the dark. "Why don't you try it out?" I carefully open the cage and lift one out in my hand. I can feel the tiny warmth from her body.

Her long ears twitch as she turns her head toward me, recognizing me as a human. Her pink eyes crinkle up as if she's smiling. "This is a rabbit, Kyu. Or you can call it a bunny, I guess."

I gently hold my cupped palms out to Kyu. His eyes are slightly wider than usual, as if he's expressing surprise. "It looks so fragile and adorable... like you, Sungmin." He says in a hushed voice. His hands tremble slightly.

Did Kyu just call me adorable? The thought makes me blush.

"Kyu, she's not going to bite you or anything," I pout. "See? Just cup your hands to make a platform for it. Yes, like that."

Very slowly, I let the rabbit into Kyu's hands. I hold my breath to see what will happen as he brings the bunny close to his face.

The rabbit doesn't react for a second. Then, slowly, her head turns toward Kyu.

The rabbit's eyes crinkle in a smile, and she bounds toward Kyu a little. Then a bit more. Closer and closer.

The rabbit keeps going until her nose is practically right up against Kyu's.

On Kyu's face. A... smile? Is that really a smile? His eyes are nearly lit up too with happiness.

It's like he's growing a heart...

"It's so warm and fluttering," he whispers. "Is this what a heart might feel like?"

"Kyu," I say. "The bunny recognizes you. See? You are living. You're becoming more like a human." I hug him again, carefully so as not to jostle the rabbit. "Come on, we have more to see."

Now that that miracle has started to occur
Why, why won't my tears stop flowing….?
---~***~---
Why am I shaking? What are these beats inside me?
Is this the "heart" that I wished for?

Every time Kyu sees another animal, he becomes like that.

I'm not sure whether that is a good thing or bad thing. Either he really is starting to grow a heart, or I'm just hallucinating and he's going to overload and shut down for good.

It's midday. I brought some lunch for myself and Kyu, but I still feel like something more. Something sweet.

"Kyu? Do you want to get something to eat?" Then I see it. A stall, filled with bunches of what look like fluffy pink clouds.

Immediately, I run over and buy some. I don't know why, but I've always liked sweet food. Especially sweet pumpkins, but of course there isn't any here.

Kyu has never seen this before. "What is it?" he asks, reaching out to touch it.

"It's called cotton candy. See, it's sweet. Try some." I pull some off and place it in Kyu's mouth. His eyes widen.

"It's like you: really, really sweet." That is all he can say.

We wander around for a little while longer, before coming into a greenhouse of sorts.

Even though it's a greenhouse, the air is cool and breathable. Brightly coloured butterflies flit around us, some lighting on our shoulders and wrists and clothing.

The butterflies stay with us even after we've left the greenhouse and wander through a garden in full bloom.

Nothing prepares me for what's at the end.

A huge, huge tree, towering high above our heads, and in full bloom, surrounded by other flowers. The breeze is back, and pink petals swirl around us. The butterflies are still here, and there is a sweet smell in the air. Despite the huge tree, the sky is still visible.

It's as if we're stricken dumb for a few seconds. Then, all the joy inside me bursts out.

I run and hop around the tree for ages, laughing and singing snippets of songs long forgotten. I hug the tree as well as I can, before lying down in the grass on my back. Kyu silently watches my outburst before coming to join me.

"It's beautiful." He says quietly.

"Yeah, it is." I've started cloudgazing, and I notice something. "Hey, Kyu?"

"Yes?"

"See that cloud there? The pinkish one?"

"Yes."

"It's shaped like a heart."
