Falling Feels Like This: Original Soundtrack

Oct 08, 2006 20:30

So last night I was thinking, about my characters and about the story, and I realized that while I have written down songs for the characters a couple of times, I've never actually compiled a full soundtrack. So, I give you the FFLT OST, complete with lyric snippets and explanations of why each song was chosen for what.

Track 1. Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones (Main Theme)
War, children
it's just a shot away
it's just a shot away
Uh, duh. Because "Gimme Shelter" is the definitive war-peace song. I thought about "All Along the Watchtower" and "Fortunate Son," too, but in the end decided that this was the best. And, of course, the Stones. You can't go wrong.

Track 2. Neptune, the Mystic - Gustav Holst (Dimitri)
(instrumental)
I decided to have instrumental pieces for all four of the gods, because I wanted to have that ancient feel to them. This is part of The Planets, and is the last movement of the symphony. I really liked the arrangement in this one, especially the slightly eerie sound of the choral parts in the middle.

Track 3. Up to the Roof - The Blue Man Group (Nadia)
Tried to live the life you sold me,
No matter what the cost.
Tried to go the way you told me,
But each time I got lost.
This is Nadia realizing that her father Fucked Her Up Bigtime with all that emotional repression training. When Dimitri comes along and shocks her out of it, she realizes that it was a supremely stupid way of living anyway.

Track 4. Autumn, 1st movement in Allegro - Antonio Vivaldi (Alex)
(instrumental)
My first choice was the second movement, which sounds a little more sedate and airy, but I couldn't find it on the web. Obviously I picked Autumn from The Four Seasons because it's Alex's season, the one he rules. And the opening melody is extremely recognizable.

Track 5. Shine - Imogen Heap (Leo)
Luck just gave me a kiss
then lashed me down with a leather strip
Trying to learn to swim without any water
Trying just to begin just when you're in for the slaughter
Poor fucked-up Leo. I chose "Shine" as his song because it is about the strength to move on after your life has turned into complete crap. Leo's life was always complete crap, but he ended up having enough willpower to break away, even though he collapses later.

Track 6. The Firebird Suite - Igor Stravinski (Fiona)
(instrumental)
Obviously, since Fiona is the Phoenix, The Firebird was my first choice. It took me a while to find a viable recording of it, but I finally got ahold of a pretty good one.

Track 7. Bitch - Meredith Brooks (Tris)
I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed.
There's the Tris that people in the gang and everyone else sees, and then there's the Tris who takes care of Leo, poor broken baby. She's rash and impulsive and harsh, yes, but if her maternal instincts kick in then all that negativity gets focused directly on anything that dares hurt what she's protecting.

Track 8. The Waltz of the Flowers - Peter Tchaikovsky (Kara)
(instrumental)
It's an obvious choice for an earth goddess, but it wasn't my first choice. My first choice was Mozart's Piano Concerto no. 12, Movement III. Since I couldn't find that one, I picked Waltz of the Flowers instead. I like it, though; it's one of my favorite arrangements in The Nutcracker.

Track 9. Dream of the Archer - Heart (Shay)
"Keep to the pathway" he advised "for the woods
Are more than they might seem"
"I'd heed you now the apparition bending never
Ending sounds
Calling you away into her mystery - are your eyes
Not sparkling now?"
More for the music than the lyrics... I like the sylvan/elven/mideveal feel to this song. It's pretty, but the focus is on a man.

Track 10. Like a Stone - Audioslave (Kyrwin)
In your house I long to be
Room by room, paitiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
Kyrwin recognized that he was attracted to Jon pretty early in the story, and he was sort of waiting for him after that, through the novel. I wanted to avoid the steriotypical "Heavy metal for the demon" choice, but I also wanted something a little darker.

Track 11. Life During Wartime - The Talking Heads
Transmit the message, to the receiver
hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, couple of visas
don't even know my real name
High on a hillside, trucks are loading
everything's ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nightime
I might not ever get home
This comes from Jon being, essentially, the commander of the Resisitance's field corp for ten years. He was almost always out in the field until his father brought him back in during the actual book, because of the Four's arrival.

Track 12. Secret World - Peter Gabriel (Jon/Kyrwin)
Down by the railway siding
In our secret world, we were colliding
All the places we were hiding love
What was it we were thinking of?
"Secret World" is such a perfect lover's song, and it's especially perfect for a Soulbonded pair. The song is about the space between two lovers that is so close they actually seem to blend into each other. Plus, it's just an awesome song.

Track 13. I Can't Get Next to You - Annie Lennox (Dimitri/Kyrwin)
I can turn the gray sky blue
I can make it rain whenever I want it to
I can build a castle from a single grain of sand
I can make a ship sail on dry land
But my life is incomplete and I'm so blue,
'Cause I can't get next to you.
Uh... DUH. This song is so perfect for Dimitri's view of their relationship (or lack thereof). It even has those little "I'm a god, why don't you love me?" bits.

Track 14. The Walk - Imogen Heap (Dimitri/Nadia)
No it's not meant to be like this.
Not what I planned at all.
I don't want to feel like this.
So that makes it all your fault.
I think it took Dimitri and Nadia both by surprise when they actually started falling for each other. The song is perfect. The chorus is just one big WTF moment, like "When did I start loving you because that was NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN."

Track 15. In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel (Alex/Leo)
In your eyes
The light, the heat
In your eyes
I am complete.
What can I say? Peter Gabriel is just so... awesome. He writes the best music ever, I swear. He is my favorite artist of all time, bar none. Just... *LOVES* This song is obvious as a love song, but it's so great I had to include it.

Track 16. Magnification - Yes (Father Light)
Perception of living
I realize I’m not alone
The rings that divide
Break again upon the stone
I will show you a necklace
Where the pearls would all be lost
Without the thread between together
This would be the golden thread of trust
It was so hard to pick a lyric segment from this song, because the whole thing is perfect for his view of the seperation at the point of the book.

Track 17. Schism - Tool (Mother Darkness)
No fault, none to blame
It doesn't mean I don't desire to
Point the finger, blame the other
Watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together
Rediscover communication
Ditto the above. SO hard to choose just one section of this song. The restrained anger and the fact that what forgiveness is there is given through clenched teeth is so indicitive of what the All-Mother feels.

novel, fflt
