This is the time when I wonder most about getting a pet of my own. It's just foolishness--just lie down and go to sleep ( Read more... )

It's Harkness, of course. He gives Faramir the exact same look he did last time.

"Faramir?" he asked as he cocked his head and smiled warmly, "Is something wrong?"

All right, he doesn't know I'm dead here. Maybe I'm back, allowed to make this right.

"No. Nothing really." I don't look like nothing's wrong. "I overslept and I think I had a bad dream--nothing serious."

Perhaps it all was like a bad dream, though I remember the village. I have people I care for there. Sophie is there and my brother and his wife will be having a baby. But if I can keep myself from all that I did this weekend, then perhaps things here will not be so bad.

"It's Saturday. Saturday the sixteenth. Hey," Jack said, the smile fading, "did something happen, Faramir?" He took a step closer and reached out to lay his hand on Farmir's arm, deeply concerned.

It takes everything I have not to hit him when he touches my arm. No--not going to hurt anyone this time.

"No. I have nightmares, have had them all my life. It unnerves me for a little while but I'll be fine in a moment." It is the blue silk shirt. "I'll just be out in the sun for a few minutes then go back and finish getting dressed. I shouldn't walk around with no boots on."

That sounds perfectly logical. I'm fine.

"No...no, I wasn't. Hey," he said, trying to be soothing as he reached up to lay a gentle hand on Farmir's cheek. Someone usually so focused and collected, Jack wasn't certain what was wrong, but the man before him was only a shadow of the one Jack had flirted with shamelessly. Now wasn't a time for that, though. He just wanted to help. "What can I do?"

No hitting. No shoving. No anything violent.

"Nothing. There is nothing to do--it's a nightmare. I just need a few minutes, then I'll laugh about how foolish it is for a grown man to be afraid because of a dream." I manage to smile. He can go now. "Don't worry, please."

Go to the beach as you are supposed to do.

Jack's teeth were rotting out of his skull. Jack pulled his hands back and shoved them deep into his pockets. He frowned in his confusion and looked back down the path. "I didn't think you were sick, just...the island does things, like you said. If I can help you..."

Jack looked down as the frown solidified. Of all things in the universe, he really hated not being liked...and he hadn't even done anything.

Oh, that's not right. The words sound the same as the first time, but his teeth, what is wrong with his teeth?

"It's all right. If I needed help I would say so, thank you for asking." What else can I say? "But I'll be fine--I'll just be going to get my boots."

Jack reached out to touch Faramir's wrist. "You wouldn't need boots if you came with me for a swim ... or something more ..."

Odd. Wasn't Jack shirtless a moment ago? Now he seemed to be wearing a red and green sweater.

I can't help but pull my arm back. It's not even Captain Harkness himself but his change of clothing--addition of clothing.

"I think the island is playing a game with you, not me." I am not changed. My clothes are the same, my teeth feel fine, my hair is still with me. "Perhaps you should go speak to someone in the clinic."

The swimming or question does not even need to be addressed.

Harkness frowns. "Why? Something wrong with my face?" He reaches up with one burned hand and rips his face off, leaving a bloody skull laughing at Faramir.

"What is this?" I demand--I want a real answer. "Who are you?"

It's not Harkness and I wish I had a weapon now. Branches...

"Go back where you came from. I'd rather speak to the captain than you."

This isn't right, it's not real. Did Saruman do this? That is where I last saw Jack Harkness. Now this.

The faceless thing laughed madly for a moment longer ...

Then Faramir is back in the park, cold and covered in blood.

At least the island was warm. When I stand up, the destroyed shirts fall to the ground and the wind hits the blood on my back.

At least I know where the hotel is. I make my way there as best I can--I'd forgotten how hard it was to walk with my feet this cold. But I'll be fine when I get there.

When he gets to the hotel, it's so very different and exactly the same.

The building itself is the same ...

But instead of people, instead of a hotel clerk or staff ...

There's blood.

There is no one at the desk--why? And why also is there blood everywhere?

I need to be inside where it is warm. The trousers only cover from my waist to my knees and there's blood on them also--from when my right knee was destroyed and everything dripping down my back. It's tolerable inside but not in the cold. My feet burn as they warm again.

Where is everyone? I can't get to my room with no key.
