13 Reasons Why
So, I watched an english series entitled 13 Reasons Why. It was recommended by one of my friends so I decided to give it a try. It was a nice show, giving me a lot of things to think about. The story is about Clay who received tapes from his dead crush, Hannah. Hannah commited suicice but before she do so, she made two sets of tapes telling people the reason for her action. If anyone received the tapes, it means, he/she may have something to do with her suicide. The rules are simple. Each person needs to listen to the tapes and then passed it to the next person. If anyone didn't do so, a second set of tapes will be released to the public.
So, the show starts with Clay who was having a hard time dealing with the news of Hannah's death. At that time, I wasn't aware that there was another reason for Clay to be miserable. He kept on remembering memories with Hannah and was surprised when he went home to receive a package containing the tapes from Hannah. I'm telling you, he looked like a nice guy and it's hard to believe that he caused Hannah's death.
So, he started to listen to the tapes. As he listened, he has been forced by other people who get the tapes before him to quickly finished the tapes and passed it to the next person. They do not want other people to know about the tapes, afraid of letting other people know about their secret. Among all of them, Courtney is the biggest asshole as she continued to claim Hannah as liar to protect her reputation. It's a good thing that the biggest jerk aka Bryce didn't know about the tape because his turn is after Clay.
When Clay listened to the tapes, there were flashbacks for what happened with Hannah. There was a character named Jeff who is a friend of Clay in the flashback but he wasn't in the present. It made me curious to know why he wasn't there to support Clay after Hannah's death. Turns out, he died in an accident before Hannah and she indirectly caused the accident. Jeff is a minor character but in my opinion, if he didn't died, maybe Hannah won't commit suicide too. He was like a cupid for Hannah and Clay, always encouraging Clay to approach Hannah. But... Well... After the accident, Hannah wanted to tell the truth about the accident to Clay but he treated her badly. Maybe, at this point, Hannah felt like she lose the only friend she had, the only one she could trust.
Some people might think that Hannah was overreacting, for example in Zach's case. Some people also said that Hannah should try to reach out to Clay. But, in my opinion, I think the reason she couldn't reach out to Clay is because she was afraid. She trusted the wrong people before so maybe she didn't want to tarnish the image of Clay she had in case Clay lets her down like the others.
One thing I learn from this series is we have to be careful in what we say or do even though it seems harmless. Like I mentioned before, Hannah seems to be overreacting in Zach's case for stealing the encouragement note she got in communication class. But, for someone who went through a hard time in high school, those notes might be her only way to feel she was appreciated by other people. Same goes with Alex who nominated Hannah's ass as the best ass in the school. He did it out of revenge for Jessica but because of the list, Hannah became the victim of harrassment in school as well as destroying the friendship she had with Jessica.
Ah, when I finished watching the series, I remembered my friends in high school. In some way, I might hurt their feeling and they might hurt me. That could be the reason why we're no longer friends.
I also remembered someone else when I watched the series. The way Hannah and Clay acted during a party was just like the way I always acted around someone during gathering when I was an undergraduate student. You know, sort of like you want to talk with them but you were too shy. If only I've been a little bit forward, maybe things will be different between us. But, it's okay. We're not meant to be together.
I might talk about Pretty Little Liars next. It is a mess but I'm still watching because of Haleb and I want to know how are they going to wrap the story.
