Cry For You
Sho closed his file loudly before stood up and went on his way to the elevator. He fidgeted uncomfortably in front of the elevator as he pushed the up button hastily. He cursed the elevator for taking too much time for his liking. He stepped inside as soon as it was opened, pushed the close button that will led him to the roof before leaning against the metal wall and sighed.
He was grateful that the elevator didn’t stop even once before reaching its destination. He wasn’t in the mood to face anyone right now. He just wanted to be alone to curse his luck. He needed a place to relax. He had chosen the roof despite his Acrophobia because he really could use some fresh air and less chance to bump into anyone there. He climbed the stairs to the roof and stepped outside before leaning down against the wall beside the door. He hung his head in between his knees and closed his eyes.
Masaki, he thought. Aiba Masaki. Aiba. How can he not recognize that name? The name he always called every morning to report for his duty. The name of the man he respected so much; the reason why he apply for that company in the first place. Aiba Hiroki, the respected director of the company turned out to be Masaki’s grandfather. Sure there must be hundreds of Aibas in that company alone but he was mad of himself to completely unaware of the fact that Aiba Hiroki and Aiba Masaki were related.
He placed his bag on the small cabinet beside his desk and turned the PC on like he did everyday. He settled on his chair and went through his email before going to his assignment for the day. He clicked at one mail caught his attention and his eyes widened upon seeing its content.
There were pictures of him and Aiba looking very intimate towards each other, holding hands and clinging onto each other, also a slightly huge picture of them kissing. His face wasn’t as visible as Aiba’s in those pictures but what surprised him was the writing under the pictures.
- Office romance affair: Sakurai Sho, the marketing executive and Aiba Masaki, the grandson of one of the company’s directors… -
By the looked of everyone around him that day, Sho knew that they were already aware of that email. Whispers can be heard along the café and staff lounge when he walked there. He also knew that the email was sent by one of the employees since it was used by the employees to spread any official and confidential information among each other faster.
He was too absorbed with his own thoughts he didn’t realize that someone had opened the door to the roof and now standing beside him. He snapped back into present only when that person called for him.
“There you are,” the person said cheerfully. “I was looking for you.”
Sho looked up to the cherry person before looking back down instinctively. His heart hurt upon seeing the newcomer’s face. He didn’t want to deal with that matter at that moment. He just needed time to calm himself down and get the day over with.
“Sho-chan?” Aiba called.
“What do you want?” Sho asked coldly.
“I want to tell you that I-” Aiba stopped when he noticed Sho’s unusual tone. “Sho-chan, what’s wrong?” he asked as he reached out to touch Sho but stopped in the middle when he felt the unwelcomed aura Sho’s emitting. So he kneeled down facing his sulking boyfriend instead. “Are you sick?” he asked worriedly.
“I’m fine. I just want to be alone right now,” Sho said and without lifting his head. He hoped that Aiba will understand to not to get closer to him.
“Sho-chan?”
Sho knew he couldn’t ignore his lover anymore upon hearing the other’s pleading voice. “Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked instead.
“About what?”
“Have you checked your email today?” Sho continued without looking at his lover beside him.
“No, why?”
“You should check your email more often,” Sho said quietly as he looked at Aiba, hesitating whether to carry on to beat around the bush or to come clean about the matter. He let out a sigh before continuing. “Aiba Hiroki.”
“What about him?” Aiba asked again. He was more confused than ever. He wondered what made Sho acting so weird like that. “What’s it about, Sho-chan?”
“Don’t act like you know nothing,” Sho suddenly snapped. Aiba really didn’t know what he was talking about or he’s a genius in acting innocent. “Why didn’t you tell me, that he’s your grandfather?!”
“You… didn’t ask,” Aiba answered calmly despite being taken aback by Sho’s sudden burst.
“Oh, so then it just slips out of your mind to just tell me that the director is your grandfather?” Sho asked with annoyance. He fought back the tears that threatening to come out. “After all the times we spent together, it didn’t occur even a little to you that maybe you should tell me something this important? ‘By the way, Sho-chan, the director you’re looking up so much is actually my grandfather’.” The tone of his voice shifted at the last sentence, mimicking Aiba's.
Aiba was taken aback with Sho’s words but he tried to stay unaffected. “Did something happen?” he asked with worried. “Did he say anything to you?”
“Does he have to say ‘something’ to me before you can tell me about him?” Sho asked with irritation.
“N- No. I didn’t mean that. Sho-chan, I didn’t think that-” Aiba stopped when he chocked on his words. He tried to hide his shaking voice but failed badly as Sho could see right through him.
“What?” Sho suddenly felt betrayed. He couldn’t believe that the man he was dating for almost a month was actually his employer’s close relative. “What didn’t you think?”
“I didn’t think that knowing this fact matter so much to you.”
“You should’ve known after all the things I’ve said about him.” How I wish I could be just like him, Sho continued in his head.
“Is it that important for you to know that he’s my grandfather?” Aiba said softly, giving up on shouting. He admitted in his head that he intentionally didn’t tell Sho about his relation with the director of the company they’re working for. It was because he didn’t want to have a relationship that was based on something else rather than love. He was thinking of telling him when time was right but he didn’t think that Sho would be this mad though. “Does it matter so much to you that you have to be mad at me for not telling you earlier, Sho-chan?”
“You know it’s not about that,” Sho said weakly.
“Then, what’s it about?!” Aiba cried out. “Tell me what make you so worked up?!”
Sho stayed silent upon hearing Aiba’s words. He didn’t mean to be mean to Aiba but the fact that his relationship and Aiba was now exposed to their colleagues really got him. And the fact that Aiba was his superior’s relative didn’t help. Not that he actually mind, but due to that, all his hard work will not be looked at the same again. Everyone will think that he had used Aiba to get to where he was now. No one would believe if he told them that he just got to know Aiba only recently. But again that was insignificant compared to what he and Aiba had.
What got to Sho the most was the promise they made to each other. There will be no secret between the, and yet, Aiba didn’t tell him about this particular matter. It hurt him that Aiba didn’t trust him that much to keep the matter from him. He looked at Aiba slowly and saw him looking at him with worries, oblivious to the tears falling down his cheeks.
“What about your promise; not to keep anything from each other?” Sho asked after a moment of silence. “If you couldn’t trust me this much, I don’t think we should continue this.”
“Sho-chan, no,” Aiba pleaded as he grasped on Sho’s elbow. “Don’t say that, please. I’m sorry.”
“Maybe we shouldn’t be together in the first place,” Sho said as he slowly pull away from Aiba and looked away to avoid Aiba’s pleading eyes. “I’m… breaking up with you, Masaki,” he forced himself to say it as a drop of tear rolled down his left cheek. He thought that it was best for them to end the relationship there and then, than hurting more afterward when they’ve become more essential to each other’s life. He didn’t even spare a glace at Aiba as he went to the door, oblivious to Aiba’s reaction afterwards.
