Thoughts On a Sunday

Yesterday I had lunch with two of my Lord of the Rings friends. We met at a showing of Return of the King a couple years ago, started talking and have been friends ever since. :-) My birthday is on the 6th and one of my friends has hers on the 7th, so we meet and celebrate them together. It's always nice having all three of us together.

I got a bunch of cool gifts - a pair of handmade earrings, two ceramic cobalt blue mixing bowls, kerchiefs, baskets and fun but practical things.

This morning I went to my niece's new place for Easter brunch. She and a friend just moved into a nifty two-bedroom apartment across town. Her friend is a chef! We had an absolutely yummy meal and a very tasty champagne lemonade.

The rest of day was spent at home, relaxing. I have to go back to work tomorrow. It shouldn't be too bad as it's Spring Break and most of the students will be gone.

I did check my work email and it seems the faculty union have tentatively settled their contract with the Chancellor's Office. Now the union membership must vote on whether to accept the contract or not. Fingers crossed that there will be no strike which is what everyone wants, including the faculty.

In addition to getting my apartment in order this week, I've done some thinking about my writing. Mostly not beating myself up over producing very little of it. I did do some reading including a recent Writer's Digest issue called Writing Basics. In it one theme came up over and over again -- the majority of writers should and do read a lot and read widely. It's something I've resisted for a long time, a very long time. As a kid I was a voracious reader, mostly of fiction. I'm not exactly sure why or when I stopped. I do remember that I loved to read all kinds of fiction. Why I haven't gone back to it is a mystery too. Just thinking about it makes me uncomfortable. And that's a good sign. Whenever I notice resistance it means I'm on the right track. As I sit here typing this I'm looking at my new bookshelves and realize I haven't read half the books on them.

I reckon now is as good a time as any to begin again.
