Return from the wilds of Sunny Beach

Well now, I'm back from my supposedly wonderful holiday in Bulgaria. Oh the tales I have to tell! So, we flew in last Friday night at about 9 or ten local time, after an hour's delay in Dublin airport. Got off the plane, and while walking across to the terminal, was trying to figure out if the balmy heat was coming from the plane's engines. Turns out it wasn't. At eleven o clock local time, when we got to our apartment, it was 25 degrees C. Which was great! Did the usual settling in, got an insanely late dinner, and crashed. Next morning (or afternoon by the time we were up and moving) it was 42 degrees. Nearly died of the heat seeing as we hadn't had time to adjust. Went for a wander, and by the evening at dinner, I realised my throat was in bits. Next morning twas so bad I had to haul ass to the doctor. Who, by the way, was incredibly hot! mmm.... Aanyways, turned out that I had a throat infection. Had to spend the whole week on antibiotics, which had me in bits. Bulgarian medication seems to be designed to destroy stomach lining! I think its a plot, so they can make more money by having to treat people after they've been ill already, for severe stomach ulcers!!! heehee. But sure it was grand. Was feeling better after two or three days, so I hadn't missed the whole holiday. Unlike my mother, who got food poisoning on the Monday, and was crippled with weakness for the whole holiday. As holidays go, we've always been pretty lucky, the only badness being a bit of sunstroke a few years ago in Lanzarote. But this took the biscuit. We had to have a disaster at some stage... And oh how we did it in style. All plans for sunning ourselves by the pool and on the shores of the Black Sea were very much destroyed, and tans suffered dramatically. But in fairness, it wasn't all bad. Thursday night, our last night, everyone was feeling good, we had a lovely dinner, and went for a walk along the promenade. Where the 9 foot python that I'd been coveting for the week was still lying on the pavement at the feet of his owner, a lovely gentleman who would take your picture with his snake for the equivalent of just €5. And I know some of you are reading the most disgraceful innuendo into that... I'd just like to say.... I'm proud of you! :p So anyways, the last night was immortalised in Polaroid, me standing by a palm tree with a massive Python draped around my shoulders. Coolest. Moment. Ever. It was great. As our flight on Friday wasn't until the late evening, we decided to spend the morning and afternoon in Nessebar, a 6th century town which was excavated and resettled. It was spectacular, particularly after the overwhelming modernity of the touristy resort we'd been staying in. Tiny narrow cobbled streets, gorgeously restored old buildings, fantastic antique stores with some fascinating soviet and WW2 memorabilia. Such a wonderful experience. Pity it was the hottest day of the week so far. 45 degrees at least. About 42 in the shade. Still wouldn't have missed it for the world. And then we headed home. Or tried to. Our flight was delayed. By three hours! Sitting in a tiny little regional airport in that heat is no joke! Though at least it wasn't in the heat of the day. That would have been a killer. So between that, the typical latecomers to boarding (you'd think after a three hour delay the stragglers would've caught up!), and a cock up at Dublin airport waiting for the bags to come from the plane, it was 4.30am Irish time by the time we got back. I think we spent about 13 hours travelling altogether! So, the verdict - somewhat disastrous, but by no means all bad! Though I didn't get my cocktails... *pout*
Well now, I think thats plenty of writing for now, so I'm gonna go feed! Bye!
