Few things make me as upset as hearing peoples stories of their barriers to getting birth control. Many women have had to scramble in the wake of the Planned Parenthood closure in Davis Sq to find a doctor accepting patients so they can continue their birth control. One woman was told she had to see a specialist before she could get a refill on her birth control to rule out a contraindication -- which she didn't have. Another was told she was due for a Pap and thus would not get a refill until she came in for her exam. Excuse me but, though they are routine, Paps are also invasive and I would never withhold birth control from, say, a trauma survivor just to check off the Pap box.
Yes, there are condoms, which are relatively cheap but a nontrivial cost.
However, because they lack hormones, condoms are worthless for women who suffer from painful or heavy or irregular periods or who have endometriosis or PCOS or any number of other conditions of the lady parts.
Women are told they are too young or too old or too fat or too sick and are often NOT provided with information on other options that have equal efficacy.
Not to mention that by withholding birth control, these doctors are putting women at risk of pregnancy which can result in nausea, vomiting, absenteeism, greater risk of domestic abuse, diabetes, hypertension, liver disease, hemorrhage, seizures, and death.
Need I say more?
