Funtime with mother nature

As some of you in Asia may be aware, internet loading speeds have slowed to a crawl when accessing most foreign websites thanks to a typhoon fudging up an undersea cable that apparently is used by several internet providers. As pointed out here I too cannot comprehend why a handful of companies would rely on a single source to provide internet for tens of thousands (if not millions) of people worldwide, let alone how a typhoon can damage a cable lying several feet below so badly.

More importantly, did nobody ever thought of having a backup cable, like srsly? Knowing full well that it lies in a earthquake / typhoon area and not carrying out any countermeasures even after a similar occurence 3 bloody years ago is just plain retarded. Now, internet speeds seemed to have gone back to normal since this evening (as was predicted when repairs would be finished) but its acting up again, which is extremely frustrating particularly due to lack of official information from internet service providers Singnet and Starhub - not a single announcement or notice on their official website, gg! Perhaps another typhoon decided to waltz by, but it's times like this that makes me wish I living in Japan D;
